1 Thursday, September 19, 1985 Daily Nebraskan Page 13 Moe Iba assists writer; Nebraska 31, Illinois 28 By Jeff Apel Staff Reporter Let me get something straight. It seems for every fan I have, an abundant supply of people are more than willing to criticize me. (And yes, for my numerous fans in a certain astronomy class, I can pick my own nose.) For those of you who do not appreciate my predictions, let me say that last week I went 6-2, missing only Air Force's rout of Wyoming and Maryland's suprising victory over Boston College. Since I did continue to improve my winning precentages, (for the year I am now 15-12) I didn't have to keep my promise to bring Corn husker basketball coach Moe Iba into this week's predictions. But because of popular demand, (and because every time I called the White House to talk to President Reagan they said he was too busy sleeping) I welcome Iba as my special guset of this week's column. Alabama 31, Cincinnati 20 at Univer sity, Ala. Iba said he favored Alabama by a 24-17 score because he had just watched them play an impressive game on television, I'll agree with him, but say this game will have a little higher score because Cincinnati showed a dangerous offense in its first three games. Navy 21, Indiana 12 at Bloomington, Ind. Even when I reminded him that Bobby Knight wouldn't be coaching, Moe still said he liked Indiana by a 3 point margin because of their rout of Louisville (That's what you get for running out on Miami, Howard). I disagree. I think Navy is superior, even if they do have a Heisman Trophy candidate with a name you can't pronounce. Nebraska 31, Illinois 28 at Lincoln. I think this game will be the most exciting contest of the 1985 Husker season. It matches a Nebraska team which has a great running attack but virtually no passing game, against an Illinois team, which has a dangerous passing attack but no running game. I'm agreeing with Moe, largely because of the home field advantage. Nebraska will score their first 1985 victory here. Ohio State 24, Colorado 13 at Boulder, Colo. Asking Colorado to win three consecutive games in a season is like asking Bill Jackman to learn to play defense. This score could be a lot worse if the Buckeyes had Keith Byars, who is still sidelined with a broken foot. Moe agrees with me, saying Ohio State will win by a 28-14 score, Michigan State 21, Notre Dame 20 at Notre Dame, Ind. (Apel's upset special) Moe said he liked Notre Dame by a 30-14 clip because he thought they played well in last week's loss to Michigan. But I disagree. I think the Fighting Irish will drop their second game in a row, which will all but seal Gerry Faust's future with Notre Dame (remember, you heard it here first). Michigan 24, South Carlina 13 at Co lumbia, S.C. On paper, this game is probably the best game of the week. South Carolina posted a 10-2 record last season while Michigan has great tradition. I'm going along with Moe and saying Michigan will win rather handily. Other scores: Air Force 28, Rice 7, Arizona 23, California 10, Boston College 21, Pittsburg 12, BYU 17, Temple 10, Georgia 24, Clemson 21, Florida State 17, over a drugged up Memphis State squad by 3, Washington 20, Houston 10, Vanderbilt 10, Iowa State 9, Kansas 38, Indiana State 3, Texas Christian 14, Kansas State 6, Texas 31, Missouri 13, Stanford 21, Oregon 9, Penn State 21, East Carolina 17, UCLA 31, San Diego State 14, USC 21, Baylor 13 and Maryland 31, West Virginia 12. Courtesy UNL Sports Information Annie Adamczak Adamczak named Player of the Week; Husker record 7-0 From Staff Reports Nebraska volleyball player Annie Adamo zak has been named Big Eight Player of the Week by the Big Eight for the second straight week. Adamczak helped the Cornhuskers to the championship of the Wyoming Volleyball Tournament last weekend. Nebraska raised its record to a perfect 7-0. Adamczak had 56 kills, 12 blocks, four aces, and 72 digs. Nebraska is now ranked fourth by the Col legiate Volleyball Coaches Association, the highest ranking ever for a team east of the rocky mountains. The Huskers are ranked fifth by the NCAA. The Nebraska volleyball team will be in action this weekend when it travels to Cali fornia for the San Jose Invitational Tourna ment. Four of the six top-ranked volleyball teams are entered in the tournament, includ ing No. 6 Colorado State, Stanford and San Jose State, both tied for second. The Huskers return to home action Sept. 28 when they are hosts of Brigham Young and Oregon at the Coliseum. Carolina, Illinois picked to win in weekend games By Herschel Nissenson The Associated Press South Carolina has amassed 1,114 yards in its first two games and the task of trying to stop Coach Joe Morrison's Gamecocks now rests with Gary Moeller, Michigan's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. And Moeller just may have some knowledge of Morrison's thinking. You see, he's married to the former Ann Morrison of Lima, Ohio, who happens to be Joe's sister. "We haven't stopped anybody yet," said Coach Bo Schembechler, which isn't quite true. The Wolverine's stopped Notre Dame 20-12 and every time the Irish got close, Michigan forced them to settle for a field goal. The 15th-ranked Gamecocks, play ing at home, are 3-point favorites over the No. 19 Wolverines. The pick is South Carolina 21-14. Last week's score was 38 right, 13 wrong and three ties for a percentage of .745. For the season, it's 72-27-4 .727. Against the point spread, last week's count was 17-17-1 .500. On the year, it's 30-33-1 - .476. This week's only other game between members of the Associated Press Top Twenty finds No. 20 Illinois at No. 18 Nebraska, where the Cornhuskers are 7'2-point favorites. The Ilini didn't play well in losing to Southern Cal and barely Southern Illi nois, a Division I-AA team. But Nebraska was victimized by a passing team (Flor ida State) in its opener, so in the Upset Special of the, Illinois 24-17. Baylor at No. 3 Southern Cal (favored by 11): Southern Cal 28-14.
