Dan DulaneyDally Nebraskan Scott Messier, student director of the NU drum line, directs his drummers to precision during an early morning practice at Memorial Stadium on Wednes day. Drum-line director creates beat for others to march to By Steve Noble Staff Reporter It's 3 a.m., and Scott Messier sits at his desk. He momentarily pauses to drink his Sanka and to arrange the scattered papers on his desk. "I won't sleep tonight," he has told people earlier in the day. A generous pile of empty beer cans and a bottle of liquid paper lie nearby as Messier com poses the music that the UNL drum line will rehearse later that morning. Messier, a senior music education major, has learned to cope with late hours and early dead lines. As the drum-line director for the UNL marching band, he creates the music for the percussion section, teaches it to the drum-line and runs the section s daily practices in Memor ial Stadium. The dedication and work are necessary be cause one song for one half-time show can take 12 to 15 hours to write, Messier said. During the marching season, the drum line is on the field from 7:15 to 9 am. each day, and they also practice on Wednesday evenings. "We live our mornings in an empty stadium," Messier said. "There's nothing else out there but concrete." But on football Saturdays when the concrete emptiness fills with 76,000 people, the hours spent writing and rehearsing begin to pay off. "The thing that makes me feel the best is knowing that, having performed in three bowl games, millions of people have heard my writing for the section, Messier said.
