Friday, September 13, 1985 Daily Nebraskan Page 3 Smith Hall resolution criticizes women's training table addition By Jody Beem Staff Reporter A resolution criticizing placement of the Women's Training Table in Smith Residence Hall without first consulting the hall's residents was unanimously approved by the Residence Hall Asso ciation Thursday. The student governments of the Harper-Schramm-Smith dormitory com plex and Smith Hall unanimously agreed to support the resolution earlier this week. In two days, Smith Hall Presi dent Sydney Warner collected 232 sig natures from residents who criticized the decision to build the training table in Smith Hall. Signatures are still being collected from other resi dents. "I don't have any problem with the women athletes having an area (train ing table)," said Warner, "especially since they were excluded from the men's training table. But we are con demning the fact that they put it in the residence hall study area without con sulting us." Warner said that some residents suggested the new area have specific hours for the athletes to study and then be opened for everyone's use. Cur rently, she said, the training table is occupying the space that housed the hall's piano rehearsal room and resi dents' study area The remaining study area must also be used as a prac tice room for the piano, which defeats both purposes, she said. "Maybe we can't change this one thing, but hopefully we can keep peo ple from taking away further housing areas without consulting us," said Dave Edwards, a member of RHA. RIIA agreed to form a committee with Warner as chairperson to cont inue looking into the matter and to bring it before ASUN. In other news, Woody Getz, RHA advisor, said that residence hall mem bers should be aware that even with the breakup of AT&T, students cannot sign separate agreements with other phone companies. UNL has signed a contract to use AT&T and LT&T exclusively, Getz said, so it would go against the contract for students to sign with another company. Another company cannot connect with the campus switchboard, so it is tech nically impossible to have another long distance company, he said. That doesn't mean that other com panies can't try to sell st udents a con tract, Getz said. These contracts are still binding even if the student cannot receive the services of the company. Hans for Residence Hall Week, November 17-23, were also discussed. This year the event will feature East Campus activities. The Fun Run, spon sored by Reader's Digest, is scheduled on East Campus along with one resi dence hall "Family Feud." Other plan ned activities include a fashion show, movies, educational programs and a day when students can call anywhere in the nation from the city union, free. Single & Pregnant? By a Daily Nebraskan Staff Reporter The Nebraska Union Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to replace the present ride board in the Nebraska Union with a computerized device that will link UNL students needing rides with other students across the country. The new "Ridebank" will be mounted on the wall in the hallway in the southwest corner of the union, where the present system is located. It will be 54 inches wide, 48 inches high and 14 inches deep. By pressing a series of keys, students can enter their name, address and intended destination into the system. Students then receive a printout listing the names of potential rides. People wanting shorter trips within the state of region will be able to use a local program on the computer. CMI, the company that produces the Ridebank machines, will hire a UNL student to handle system problems. The board should be ready for install ment by Thanksgiving, said Frank Kuhn, assistant director of the Nebraska Union. fy n pi (fo,oUowc:y)) vb. fr.
