Page8 Daily t4ebraskan Aoloioti Well, the big game is over and Nebraska came up on the short end. But don't despair, the Cornhuskers will put things back together this Saturday when they play. . . .Wait a minute, who moved Saturday's game? Actually, Nebraska moved Saturday's game. Nebraska-Florida State was to have been this Saturday but was moved for television (a phrase everyone should learn to hate.) So instead of opening the season Saturday against Florida State, the Eg a team provides coaches, the players and the fans have to wait an extra week to get back into action. So now we have a Saturday void. If you're wondering what to do without your Saturday Nebraska football fix I have a suggestion adopt a team. That's right, adopt a team. It's easy to do and it doesn't cost much money. All you do is pick a team, go get some clothes with the school's colors and find a radio or television station that's covering your adopted team's game. The next question is which team should you adopt? Because Nebraska lost last week, you want to make sure to pick a team with a great chance to win. That will automatically eliminate most teams intheAPorUPI top 20. Bob Asmussen A Big Eight team might not be a bad idea. We've got to eliminate Kansas State right away. After all, they lost to Wichita State. Colorado has to go too. Asking the Buffs to win two games in a row is about like asking the state legis lature for more money. The Buffs won their last game so they ve used up their quota for the season. Oklahoma State might be nice but they are starting to be a real threat to Nebraska. Oklahoma would be good but they don't start their season until mid-November. Iowa State?, nah. Missouri? They do have Coach Woody and a new turf but how can we forget all those cheap shots from past seasons? So if you want to adopt a Big Eight team this week it looks like your best bet might be Kansas. Kansas? Hey, don't laugh. The Jay hawks put down their Mai Tai's long enough last week to beat a good Hawaii team. Also, they play Vanderbilt and the Commodores haven't had a hit since the release of "Night Shift". So I guess that's it. I think I'll adopt Kansas this Saturday. Here's a quick look at the Kansas football team. Kansas is quarterbacked by Mike Norseth. The junior college transfer was the premier passer in the Big Eight last season and is considered a good pro prospect. Tuesday, September 10, 1985 ouick fix O The Jayhawk defense is led by linebacker Willie Pless, an all-Big Eight player In 1 984 Pless Is one of 10 return ing Kansas starters on defense. 0 Mike Gottfried has helped turn a program around that had been racked by probation and poor play. The Jay hawks haven't played in a bowl game since 1981. That should changejn 1985 as the Jayhawks have a solid chance of postseason play. O Kansas had a big win in 1984, dominating Oklahoma in a 28-1 1 win. It was the first time Kansas had beat the Sooners since the days of Nolan Crom well. Last year's Oklahoma game is a great reason for Jayhawk optimism. So it's go Jayhawks this weekend. The game isn't on television but if you go up and down the AM dial on your radio, you'll find the game. Let out a couple of "rock chalk Jayhawk" yells during the game. I've got my press passes so I think I'll try and go. If you're going to adopt a team you might as well do it right. I just hope the Jayhawks don't find out we're not their real fans. Rifle team aims for success For many years, this university has - been wild about Nebraska football, but there has been another group of people that has done some great things recently as well. They are the Navy Rifle Team. The Rifle Team is an extra-curricular activity, and members spend three hours and sometimes more than aweek year-round sharpening their shooting skills. . They compete in the Lincoln Small Bore League one night a week. They also compete collegiately in the Big Eight Conference and against any other colleges with the Navy R.O.T.C. The heaviest competition comes in the months of March and April. The Nebraska Navy Rifle Team is one of the best in the nation. The Navy Rifle Team won the Big Eight Conference title last year. It was the first time it had been won by a Nebraska team. The team consists of a five-man -a shooting team. They fire a Remington 40xb standard rifle, which is like a .22 caliber rifle. They have three positions in which they fire from: prone, kneeling and standing. These are difficult posi tions to fire from because the weapon is not supported by any means other than by the competitor. In order for this club to compete, they must have money. They get the money themselves by cleaning the Bob Devaney Sports Center after games. Doing this, plus training and keeping up their grades takes up most of their time. "The men get a lot of self-satisfaction, and they learn a lot of self-discipline by competing," Gerald Keezel, head of the program said.
