Veterans lead optimistic KU Jayhawks
By Steve Thorn.
Staff Reporter
If the Kansas Jayhawks can create
the record they did a year ago, don't look
for all heads to turn. Kansas football
victories in the past have been dubbed
upsets; this year the wins may be
commonplace.
Newcomers to the Jayhawk lineup
this year will be a rare breed. Kansas
will return 20 starters, and Coach Mike
Gottfried has reason to be optimistic.
"This team probably has more talent
than any team I've ever coached. It's
just a matter of staying healthy,"
Gottfried said.
Gottfried, the 1984 Big Eight Coach
of the Year, has more than just talent
he has a victory under his belt. The
Jayhawks opened with a 35-27 win at
Hawaii Aug. 31.
"We played well offensively and
played well on defense when we had
to," Gottfried said. "We feel like we
beat a pretty decent team in Hawaii."
The Jayhawks trailed at the half, but
scored on their first three second half
possessions to pull away from the
iwmuuws. nigruy touted quarterback
Mike Norseth, threw for 318 yards in
the game. Norseth, who combines size
with mobility, is thought by many to be
the league's best quarterback.
"I can't compare Mike to other Big
Eight quarterbacks because I don't see
them everyday. I can say he's the best
I've ever coached," Gottfried said.
Gottfried stressed that his veteran
team was far from perfect in the game
against Hawaii.
"We did a lot of things wrong funda
mentally in the game. We're just going
back to the drawing board in practice
this week."
In addition to a capable quarter
back, the Jayhawks complete their
potent passing game with several fine
receivers. Seniors Skip Peete and
Richard Estell will be Norseth's prime
targets for the second straight year.
Gottfried's running attack won't get
the exposure that his aerial attack will,
but could be solid in its own right.
Tailbacks Lynn Williams and Robert
Mimbs rushed for over 1,100 yards last
year and fullback Mark Henderson is
another returning starter.
Linebacker Willie Pless, a pre season
Ail-American, wil lead the Jayhawk
defense. Pless led the Big Eight in
tackles last year.
"Willie is a very hard worker, and
definitely one of the best players in the
conference," Gottfried said.
Though Gottfried wouldn't comment
on the situation, one Jayhawk problem
looms large. The Jayhawks look worthy
of performing on the field, but their
classroom performances have been less
than impressive. Four players won't see
action this year because of academic
problems. In addition to these four,
four more didn't suit up in Hawaii.
Three of the eight were starters a year
ago.
"I don't have any. idea what the
situation is," Gottfried said.
Many pollsters have looked past the
Jayhawks' classroom deficiencies.
Kansas has been tabbed fourth and
fifth in most pre-season Big Eight polls.
Playboy magazine even picks the Jay
hawks to crack the top 20 at No. 19.
Gottfried, however, isn't about to fore
cast great things for his club.
"We're looking at Vanderbilt right
now. In our program, we can't afford to
look that far ahead. We'll just try to
pick up some wins, and we'll worry
about things like bowl games later,"
Gottfried said.
Although Kansas has upended
Oklahoma and rival Missouri several
times, Nebraska has the Jayhawks'
number. Gottrfried found nothing
strange about the situation.
"We're not unique in that way.
Nebraska seems to handle everyone
pretty easily," Gottfried said.
Kansas will face non-conference
opponents Vanderbilt and Florida State
as well as Indiana State and Eastern
Illinois. The Jayhawks will face seven
of their 12 opponents on their home
field in Lawrence.
'Niners will reign as lung m MFC
Analysis by Richard Cooper
Staff Reporter
There is no question who is the king
in the NFC West. The World Champion
San Francisco 49'ers should have no
problem winning the division and should
win the World Championship again.
The 'Niners only got better in the off
season. Their offense will be even more
lethal because of their first-round pick,
wide receiver Jerry Rice from Missis
sippi Valley State. And with the best
quarterback n the NFC, Joe Montana,
NFC West
Preview
who threw for a career high of 28
touchdowns, and connected 64.6 per
cent of his passes for 3,620 yards, the
49'ers will be unstoppable on offense.
As for the backfield, Wendell Tyler
(245 rushes for 1,262 yards) and Roger
Craig (1,324 total yards rushing will
give the 'Niners a well-balanced ground
game.
But if the offense of the 'Niners is
having a bad day, the opposing teams
will have a problem with the defense.
Last year it ranked second in the NFL
and allowed the fewest points scored. ;
The defensive line is solid with Fred
Dean, Gary "Big Hands" Johnson, Dwaine
Board and Lawrence Pillers. Plus, in
training camp this fall, Coach Bill
Walsh was very high on Michael Carter,
a silver medalist in shot put at the 1984
Olympics. The linebacking corps is
loaded with depth with Keena Turner,
second year linebacker Todd Shell
from BYU, Riki Ellison, the leading
tackier on the team last year, and Jim
Fahnhorst. They surely will give teams
a hard time with running the ball.
The defensive secondary, Ronnie Lott,
Carlton Williamson, Dwight Hicks and
Eric Wright, is the best in football. All
four defensive backs last year earned a
trip to the Pro Bowl, and they earned a
reputation as being the hardest hitters
in the league.
As for the rest of the division, as long
as the Rams are without running back
Eric Dickerson they will go nowhere!
Dickerson is still holding out because
he wants his contract renegotiated.
Dickerson says he is prepared to sit out
the whole season, and, if he does, the
Rams will finish in the lower half of the
division. -
The rest of the division is pretty sad.
The New Orleans Saints, if they can
overcome injury problems, might finish
8-8. But if quarterback Richard Todd
doesn't come through and the defense
gives up points, this could be Coach '
Bum Phillips last year.
Last year, the biggest problem for
the Atlanta Falcons was injuries. It is
still questionable whether William
Andrews will pky this year after suffer
ing a severe knee injury in 1983. But
Gerald Riggs took over for Andrews last
year and gained 1,488 yards on 353 car
ries. During the offseason, the Falcons
acquired Ben Bennet from the USFL. If
he plays well the Falcons might have a
better year. But they won't go to the
playoffs because their defense is still
young and their offense has too many
question marks.
Here is how I see the final standings
