By a Daily Nebraskan Staff Reporter
A 1 10,000 grant from the U.S. Depart
ment of Health and Human Services
has been awarded to the UNL Building
Family Strengths Project.
The project will use research find
ings to help people across the nation.
"There are not many solid models on
how to help families in need," said Bill
Achord, project coordinator. "It is the
first major attempt to draw together an
important body of research and apply it
to how people can use.it."
Achord, an experienced family and
marriage counselor, said he was chosen
to "take research and relate its philo
sophy and methodology to a practical
program."
Achord will be working with Kerry
Kerber of the UNL conferences and
institutes department, and Lois Schwab,
professor of human development and
the family.
"Researchers at UNL have been look-

ing into what makes for strong families
for 10 years," Schwab said.
The researchers compiled six char
acteristics of strong families. Schwab
said the characteristics include expres
sing appreciation for each other, spend
ing time together, communicating well,
showing family commitment, having a
high degree of religious faith, and deal
ing with crises positively.
Achord said they currently are
developing a model of how to work with
families in need.
After the model is developed, 50
people, including social workers, ther
apists and family practitioners, will be
selected to learn from the model to
train others, Schwab said.
Kerber said using the research re
sults to train family and marriage
counselors, social workers and other
family practitioners is a unique oppor
tunity. "It will have impact on thousands of
individual families throughout the
country," Kerber said.

Workshops set to help
teach better study skills
By a Daily Nebraskan Staff Reporter
Students are never too young or old
to improve their study skills, especially
when the help is free.
The Educational Learning Center
offers free study skills workshops at
the Nebraska Union, said center coor
dinator Carol Lotven. She recently taught
a class in college notetaking called
Cornell Notetaking Technique.
The technique involves leaving a
third of each page of notes blank. The
bigger portion is for taking notes in
class. After the lecture, Lotven said,
students should write down the main
points and key words in the blank third
of the page. This way, she said, stu
dents can quiz themselves by looking
at the main points and associating the
detailed facts with those key words.
Lotven also suggests reviewing notes
taken within 24 hours for best retention.
The Educational Learning Center
also provides free tutoring for students
who need help in English, chemistry,
computer science, history and soc
iology, The center also offers work
shops in time management, reading for
high retention and test-taking.

SENATE REPRESENTATION: In the following colleges: Arts & Science, Business, -Graduate.
FRATERNITY from Page 1
"I'd rather be a part of something I
said I started," said sophomore Kyle
Mills. "It's a feeling of accomplish
ment." Price said he and other members are
concentrating on keeping the member
ship diverse.
"We're looking for people who want
to get involved," he said.
Because of construction and the
desire to make a successful comeback,
Price said, the atmosphere is casual.
Pledges are active as soon as they join.
"Everyone's the same," sophomore
Rich Antile said. "In other fraternities,
it's like two different houses with
actives and pledges."
Price said the house bypassed for
mal rush and relied on an informal
system looking for men who want to
be active.
Renovation should be completed Oct.
1, he said.
"We want to be our own organization
and have fun doing it," Price said.
