Young UNL playwright
will see work on stage
By Steve Noble
Staff Reporter
When he was fifteen, David Boles
made himself a promise. When he
felt he deserved it and could afford
it, he planned to splurge and buy
himself something special to com
memorate his success.
Boles, a UNL junior, worked part
time as an announcer for KFOR
radio. As a college sophomore, he
won the Vreelands Award for Eng
lish and a scholarship for creative
writing. A play he wrote in his intro
duction to playwriting class won
first place and a cash prize in the
1984 Purchase Playwriting contest
in New York.
But he still had not bought that
special item.
However, this summer, after co
writing a script for NETV about the
life of William Jennings Bryan and
having a play he wrote selected for
production by the University Thea
tre Department, Boles decided it
was time to keep the promise he
made to himself.
He bought himself a ring, a gold
ring with a diamond in the middle.
David wrote the play "A Stone's
Throw" in an advanced playwriting
class. Unknown to him, it was sub
mitted by his instructor, Prof. Rex
McGraw to the selection committee
for consideration in the fall perfor
mance schedule. McGraw is chair
man of the department of theater
arts and dance.
"A Stone's Throw" is a story
about a woman who loses control of
her life," Boles said.
It will be entered in the Ameri
can College Theatre Competition.
"It's very challenging," David said,
about seeing the play being pro
duced. "You write it and then give it
to somebody else. Then you put
other people in it. It's a metamor
phosis," he said.
"A Stone's Throw" will be pres
ented Oct. 24 through Nov. 2 in
Temple's Studio Theater.
For the long,
soft road.
The road has a concrete way of making its presence felt. To soften
the blows, try the New Balance 470.
The 470's midsolewedge has exceptional cushioning. It has a
counter reinforcer to prevent rear shoe breakdown
and a long-wearing carbon rubber outsole.
. The 470. It can turn a hard road into a soft touch.
