NCAA rules allow a coach to be a
graduate assistant only two years. Since
Young's eligibility is used up, Osborne
asked him to become the volunteer
freshman coach this fall.
Although he will still not directly
receive any type of salary for his coach
ing, Young will maintain a steady
source of income through working at
the Nebraska Foundation.

"Things are starting to look better,"
Young said. "The future is getting
brighter. It's just another step up the
ladder."
Although Young has given up his
hopes of earning a master's degree in
computer science, he said he originally
wanted it to go along with his master's
degree he received in 1972 from Reed
College in liberal arts. However, Young
still has high aspirations.
"I'd like to one day become a head
football coach somewhere, hopefully
here," he said. "If another opportunity
presented itself somewhere else, I
might consider it but I'd like to stay
right here."
