All the Chicago Bulls rookie did was win the Rookie of the Year award, lead the Bulls to the playoffs for the first time in years, and help increase attendance in Chicago Stadium by 89 percent. If what happened in last year's draft reoccurs in 1985, the best rookie in the NBA next season will be Creighton's Benoit Benjamin. Don't anyone hold their breath. This column is being written Mon day so when all the guesses come true, don't anyone think the Daily Nebras kan cheated. Oh, and one more thing: this is only an exhibition, it is not a competition, so please no wagering. 1) New York Knicks-Patrick Ewing, Georgetown Not that this would surprise anyone. The sur prising thing will be the Knicks in 1985-86. Ewing is considered a defensive-oriented center. With the 24 second clock and his ability to run and fill the lane, Ewing might become a dominat ing offensive force. 2) Indiana Pacers-Wayman Tisdale, Oklahoma In a recent poll, 94 percent of the respondents to an Indianapolis newspaper survey said they'd take Tisdale over Benjamin. You don't go against the wishes of the peo ple. The Pacers would really like Ben jamin, who would allow them to move Steve Stipanovich to power forward. Tisdale isn't a bad choice. He could challenge Bernard King for the scoring title in his rookie season. Unfortu nately for Wayman, he'll be playing with guys like Jerry Sichting, which will give the Pacers little chance of making the playoffs. 3) L.A. Perhaps it's because of that healthy American concept of competition. It's true that competition produces better results in given areas, but it is quickly destroying another concept which I think is much healthier and more impor tant than competition. Moderation. No one seems to be "moderately good" at anything anymore. You're either an expert at something, or you don't admit to doing it at all, for fear of admitting you are one of the most dreaded things in our society average. My theory is that this will soon make the average, well-rounded person extinct because we are being pres sured into choosing one area in which we must excel. When this happens, we exclude a whole world of other interesting things. I think it makes much more sense to enjoy a variety of experiences, even if they aren't all perfect. Besides, average people would not exist if man kind has always been as perfect as we pretend to be. The world of sports and fitness is a prime example of this. Remember when everyone jogged? People would jog around the block a few times in their white gym shoes to keep fit. In case you haven't noticed, it's not "in" to jog anymore. Fonda had never introduced her line of fashionable work out clothes. It has created a syndrome. It gives the Isn't it interesting how taboo it has become for Jane and John Average to jog (cough, cough) in (heaven forbid) gym shoes. Please! It is so unfashionable! Fashion is an instance within the sports and fitness world which has been carried to the extreme. I wish Jane Fonda had never introduced her line of fashionable wor kout clothes. It has created a syndrome. It gives the impression that you need to spend money for color coordinated outfits in order to benefit from exercise. Sure, some of these things are nice, but I find that the people who have a closet full of over-sized panty hose are the ones who sweat the least when they work out, if they work out at all. What is even more ludicrous is that people who go to exercise classes because they want to have a better look ing body (or can't) wear these things until they're slim enough to look good in them! How many pink and black striped lycra pants have you seen in the "extra large" section? Obviously, exercise clothes are not made for working out. Perhaps for "checking out." Maybe that's just as well, though. Who knows what would happen if someone actually perspired in them? What I'm stressing is that it's okay to go out and play tennis today if you feel like it. You can enjoy it even if you're a rotten tennis player or if you don't own any white shorts. It's okay to jog in gray sweats and mismatched socks. It's acceptable to stop and walk if you get tired, even if you're on '0' street where everyone can see you. I'm telling you to do whatever you want to and don't worry about being good at it, or what other people will think of you if you're not. So what? My final suggestion is directed at all of the average people who happen to be good at something. Don't (par don the pun) play the game. If you're a great racquetball player, wear biking shorts at the next tournament. If you're running a 10 kilometer road race next weekend, wear black socks and a baseball cap. It'll drive all those properly dressed people who can't run or play racquetball crazy. Of course, I may be entirely wrong. You don't have to consider my suggestions. After all, I'm not an expert. I'm only moderately knowledgeable about the things I've writ ten, and I plan to stay that way.
