Continued from Page 10 Fricke said he was a little "frus trated" over the regents approval of a new NU vet school He and Norfolk Regent Margaret Robinson were the only regents opposing the idea "You can't vote for one big school and then turn around and cut some thing from something else you shouldn't be starting those programs in the first place," he said. Fricke said he thinks the Legisla ture will vote down the measure. If it does pass, he said he is confident Gov. Bob Kerrey will veto it. "The chances of it passing are very little," he said. "The money just isn't there." Befoje the regents take any action on either measure, he said, the board will wait first for the Legislature's NU budget decision, expected later this month. The Legislature gave first-round approval for the bill Thursday. Overall, Fricke said, his term as regent so far has not left him frustrated and has been what he expected when he decided to run for the position last year. The issues have been challenging, he said. "I'd like to see things move faster, but if you don't face the issues this year, you'll just have to face them next year," he said. One of those difficult issues, Fricke said, has been the governor's recom mendation for a 3 percent faculty salary increase, while the Legislature's appropriations committee is recom mending only a 1.6 percent increase in NU's total budget. "Again, we'll have to consider pro gram cuts," he said. By the time his term ends in '91, Fricke said he hopes NU will have "turned the corner." "By then I hope to have done the things we need to do and maintain the excellency in the university," Fricke said He said he plans to run again for a second term in 1891. Fricke described the university as "very conservative," stemming from his talks with patients, some of whom are parents of UNL students. v STARTS J April 28 y $15,000,000 Luggage Sale Save 40 - 50 on all Samsonite, American Tourister, Oleg Cassini, and Verdi Luggage SAMSONITE SENTRY II Durable Molded shell is strong, yet lightweight.
