"Stinger Tfcn Paradise" begins in
America wUh Eva (Eszter Belint) get
tir.3 r" the plane ficr.i Hungary ia New
Ycrk. White waiting for her Aunt Lotte
frcm Cteveland to recuperate, she roust
stay with her cousin, Willie (John
Luris) for 10 dsys.
At first Eva is little more than a
nuismce to Willie. She can't seen to
grasp the whole philosophy behind
such American institutions as TV
dinners and football. But Willie starts
to grow fond of her.
One year later, as the subtitles tell
us, Willie and his friend Eddie (Richard
Edson) take the money they've fleeced
from a crooked game of card3 to take a
trip to Cleveland, where Eva lives. Eva
is in a sad state. Her repressive Aunt
Lotte gives her little freedom and the
winter seems endless. On a whim, Wil
lie and Eddie kidnap Eva and take her
off to Florida
But Florida (this is the paradise part
of the movie) is not the dreamland they
all hoped for. Willie and Eddie blow
their small fortunes at the dog races.,
Although by the end of the movie the
trio falls into money, their lives really
are still purposeless and unhappy.
This seems to be the message of the
whole movie. No matter where they go,
from the bleak cityscrpes of New York,

The CLr.cra reminds us by dwelling
cn the sear.iy tars, moteb and gift
shop3 along the roadside, no matter
where Willie, Eddie and Eva go, glitz
. seems to follow.
"Stranger Than Paradise" is not a
subtle idealistic picture of American
life. For those of us who like flashy
movies with lots c! action, romance a.nd
happy endings, "Stranger Then Para
dise" might cense cf a little deprcssirg.
But the performances cf John Lurie
(member of the rock group The Lounge
Lizards) and Eichard Edson, with Lis
ever-present smirk, are truly convinc
ing as a couple cf down and cut burrs.
Eszter Balint gives us a fine portrayal of,
the stunning melancholy Eva.
Director Jim Jarmusch's black and
white cinematography keeps the story
moving with its tight no-nonsense
editing.
"Stranger Than Paradise" is not for
everybody, but it offers the best por
trayal of the seamy side cf Americana
to come along in years.
"Stranger Than Paradise" is shew
ing at the Sheldon Film Theatre from
Wednesday through Saturday. Admis
sion is $3 for the public and $2 for
students.
