Something finally clicked for the Nebraska
women's basketball team Wednesday night in
Boulder.
After losing four straight and falling to 2-6
in the conference, the Huskers blitzed Colo
rado 80-55. Maurtice Ivy had a career high 23
points, Debra Powell,' 19 points and six
steals, and Angie Miller, 13 points in the
victory. The Lady Buffs had beaten the
Huskers in Lincoln earlier this season.
"We played great," Nebraska Coach Kelly
Hill said. "It was a good team effort. We
played very good defense and the running
game was really clicking fof us."
It was Nebraska's best all-around game
this year, Hill said, and the team played it
without sophomore guard Stacy Imming.
Imming had tendonitis in her foot and didn't
9
make the trip. The Kearney native missed her
first game as a collegiate player after averag
ing over 30 minutes a game this season.
Without Imming, the Huskers used a one
guard offense with Cathy Owen. All 11 team
members played, and only freshman Ste
phanie Bolli didn't score.
Owen had five assists and six points and
played "great defense" on Colorado's Erin
Carson, who scored 31 against Nebraska in
Lincoln. Carson had 1 1 Wednesday night. Lisa
LaGuardia, who sat out Saturday's loss to
Oklahoma State, had eight points and four
rebounds in 16 minutes.
The Huskers will try for their first win ever
at Ahearn Fieldhouse when the Lady Cats
play host to Nebraska Saturday afternoon.
Kansas State and Nebraska are tied for
fifth in the Big Eight women's race with 3-6
records.
"We've got to beat Kansas State and win
two of the next three to have a chance at an
upper-division finish," Hill said.
Hill said the Huskers hurt the Lady Cats
with a 3 2 zone in a victory in Lincoln this
season and also had trouble with the man-to
man pressure. Both will be tried again
day.
Satur-
The Lady Cats, who finished second in the
league last year, have played without sopho
more star Carlissa Thomas for most of the Big
Eight schedule. Thomas has played in the last
two games after undergoing root canal surgery
following an inadvertant elbow against
Creighton in early January. Jennifer Jones, a
6-1 junior, leads the Lady Cats with a 17.1
scoring average.

Huskers battle Wildcats in b
erth
bid
With a chance for an upper-division berth
hanging by & thread, the Nebraska men's bas
ketball team travels to Manhattan, Kan., Satur
day night for a game with the Kansas State
Wildcats.
Nebraska, 14-5 and 4-5 in the conference, is
coming off a 64-61 loss to Colorado at Boulder
Wednesday night. Kansas State, in the midst of
its longest losing streak of the season of eight
games, is coming off a 81-77 loss to Oklahoma
State. The Wildcats are 1-8 in the conference.
"We're still looking for five players who will
mesh together as a unit," Darryl Winston, inte
rim basketball coach atKansas State, said. We
get two players to play well and two that don't."
Kansas State, 10-12 and 1-8 in the conference,
has .used 13 different lineups this year. The
Wildcats also have been hurt by the loss of Coach
Jack Hartman. Hartman had quadruple heart
bypass surgery Jan. 12.
Kansas. State is led by forwards Ben Mitchell
and Eddie Elder. They each had a season high 22
points against the Cowboys in Stillwater. Elder
is leading the team in both scoring and rebound
ing. "We're disappointed in where we are in the
standings," Winston said. "We're a lot better
team than where we are."
Nebraska is led by Dave Hoppen who was
second in the Big Eight in scoring before Wed
nesday night's game. Hoppen, averaging 24.1
points a game, is coming off a below average
performance against Colorado. His 12 point
game, one of his lowest of the year, may have
been caused by foul trouble and the high alti
tude in Colorado.,
The Cornhuskers haven't won a Big Eight road
game this season. After Missouri's upset of Kan
sas Tuesday, the Tigers are in position to claim
an upper-division berth along with Oklahoma
and Kansas. Also in the chase for the third and
fourth spots, along with the Tigers and Corn
huskers, are Iowa State and Colorado. The upper
division berths mean a home game in the post
season conference tourney.
'oiiper-staters'
Three super-staters signed volleyball letters-of-intent
to attend Nebraska next season.
Kenda Kuehner, a 6-3 middle blocker from
Giltner, Angie Millikin, a 5-9 outside hitter from
Ogallala and 5-10 Virginia Stahr of Centennial
will join Terry Pettit's nine-time defending con
ference champions, as will Lori Endicott, a set
ter from Springfield, Mo.
Endicott played for the United States junior
national team last season and chose Nebraska
over Southwest Missouri State and Missouri.
Barbie Young, a 5 9 outside hitter-setter from
Sidney, will walk on as well. Young received
scholarship offers from Wyoming, Oklahoma,
South Dakota and other smaller schools but
decided to walk on in Lincoln.
"I really like the program," Young said. "I
always knew I was going to go to Nebraska even if
I didn't play."
Young said the program and a pre-med major
were the deciding factors she used to choose
Nebraska.
The Huskers, who finished fifth in the country
last season, will lose setters Mary Buysse and
Cathy Noth and outside hitter Julie Hermann to
graduation. Barring changes, Pettit should have
six freshmen, (including redshirts Michelle
Stratbucker and Tina Siefkes) next season.
Wrestlers travel
to Hoosier state
Nebraska's wrestling team, 7-10 on the dual
season, will travel to Indiana this weekend for a
dual and a triangular with three Hoosier stata
teams.
The Huskers face Indiana tonight at 7:30 in
Bloomington and Purdue and Notre Dame Satur
day in West Lafayette.

"A lot of our kids are really starting to come
on," Assistant Coach Tim Neumann said in a
press release. "Three more wins this weekend
would keep them rolling and give them a lot of
confidence going into the Bi g Eight."
Freshman Jeff Coltvet will take a five-match
winning streak into the weekend duals, while
sophomore Jake Sabo has won four in a row.
Neumann said heavyweight Gary Albright's
shoulder has improved, but he will be held out of
the weekend matches. Nebraska football player
Tom Welter is scheduled to wrestle at heavy
weight. Gridders honored
