Wrestler...
Continued from F.e 10
At South Sioux City High School,
Dawkins took fourth ft state t ajunior
and ranked number one his senior year
before the state meet, at which he
didn't make weight.
After high school, Dawkins placed
second at the Junior Olympic Grand
Nationals. He lost only to his twin
brother, who now attends UNO, but
doecn't wrestle there.
Dawkins didn't like wrestling at
Westmar, so he joined the Army, which
now help3 pay for his schooling, alcrg
wi th a partial wrestling scholarship. He
left the Army Aug. 23 and got to Lincoln
the day classes started. Now, after
more than a semester in the program,
Dawkins said he likes it and he? 53 to
win a better scholarship next year.
Dawkin3 said he followed Nebraska
wrestling and wanted to wrestle here
since high school. .
"The competition in the Big Eight is
really tough," Dawkins said. "Before I

Just really stuck with the same stuff,
but to be a good college wrestler you
have to learn a lot of new moves, a
different style of wrestling. The coaches
here have been working with me but I
haven't caught on as good as I would
have liked to."
Fehrs said Dawkins filled a need in
the prcgram when he signed on.
"Although he's not a starter, he's an
important factor in our team," Fehrs
said. "He's filled in at both 1 18 and 1 25
for us and has for the most part done
well."
Dawkins' record i3 now 5-5 after two
losses last weekend.
Dawkins said he plans to redshirt
next year and get caught up ca his
studies. Then, he will hopefully have
time to devote to wrestling in his final
two years of eligibility. .
Despite his age, "Eight now I feel
like I'm just about with the rest cf the
freshmen," Dawkins said. "I Ve improv
ed, but I don't feel like I've improved to
my capabilities."
Fehrs said Dawkins possesses good
strength and a deceptive takedown.
"When you watch him it doesn't
appear he should get the takedowns he
gets," Fehrs said.
"Where he needs to work on most in
terms of improving himself would be to
escape from the bottom and to improve
on his endurance," Fehrs said.
In spite of Dawkins' maturity, Fehrs
said, "It is still a tremendous differ
ence in the caliber cf wrestling here as
opposed to any wrestling that he's
probably been associated with."
"In high school I was way out of
shape," Dawkins said. "I was really
short and fat. My junior year I started
lifting weights and lost a lot cf weight.
I've been called 'fatso' half my life."
