An eight-piece t-"i with members from four
countries, the group his created a sound heavily
concerned with mlsturs of rhythm upon rhythm.

on the Shadow label.
Leader Alciric Peter Nelson formed Shangeya
in 1973 after moving from Trinidad, West Indies,
to the Midwest.
Nelson uses a mix cf cdypso and regg&e to
bring his feelings to life. This mix is combined in
a music form knevn as soca, which is reggae
speeded up to its maximum level.
Nebon has played this music since his arrival
In the Twin City area more than 12 years ago. At
tha time Shangeya was first farming, regsae was
nowhere near its current popularity. Nelson is
credited with bringing Third World music to the
Twin City area.
The style and atttitude of the band is laid
back, and this is reflected heavily on the album.
Many cf the songs lull in complacency, causing
an unexpected feeling cf boredom.
On songs such as "Free Yourself ar.d the
regsae instrumental "Tribute," Shar.goya ssems
to have captured the essential balance between
the use of so many Instruments and rhythms.
Shangoya seems to intentionally avoid
thought-provoking idealism in their lyrics. They
prefer to say free yourself, get up and dance.
Although it is not a flaw, it tends to wear itself
thin after eight songs.
There is some impressive base and guitar
work, but the constant use of various forms of
percussion becomes tediously uniform.
Shangoya has appeared in concert with Peter
Tosh and the Clash and will make an appearance
at the Zoo Bar tonight.
