Wrestlers struggle

One problem Nebraska's wrestling team
has not had this season is a lack of quality
competition.
While the freshman-dominated squad has
struggled with inexperience and injuries, the
team has faced five of the nation's top seven
teams. Another one, Oklahoma State, i3
scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bob
Devaney Sports Center.
Last year Oklahoma State won the Big
Eight tournament on the way to an unde
feated season. The Cowboys placed second in
the NCAA tournament.
This year the Cowboys feature four wrestlers
ranked in the nation's top three of their div
isions, and one ranked number six.
Conversely, Nebraska graduated two of its
wrestlers who made it to nationals. This sea
son the team has lost duals to Clemson, Lock
Haven, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Arizona
State. The Kuskers scored on two forfeits and
a draw in the loss to the Sun Devils in Lincoln
Tuesday.
In last season's dual, Oklahoma State won
4 1-5. Nebraska hasn't beaten Oklahoma State
in 19 tries.
Nebraska has two wrestlers in the nation's
top five, fourth-ranked Matt Campbell at 118
and fifth-ranked heavyweight Gary Albright.
However, Campbell, a junior with a 16-3
record will wrestle top-ranked Mark Perry,
22-11. Albright, 112-1, will wrestle the third
ranked heavyweight, Kahlen O'Hara, who
owns a 17-3 record.
The rest of Arizona State's lineup includes
Bill Dykeman at 158, ranked second with a
27-3 record, John Smith at 134, ranked second
with a 25-1 record, and Luke Skove at 142,
ranked sixth with a 22-3-1 record. Dykeman,
Skove and Perry placed in last year's NCAA
tournament and are Big Eight champions.
Nebraska will pit six freshmen against the
Cowboys. Those six are: Teny Cook, (14-9) at
126; Mike Monfore, (5-13) at 134; Keenan
Turner, (15-6) at 150; Jeff Coltvet, (8-13) at
158; Cody Olson, (6-13-2) at 177; and Craig
Thalken, (0-11) at 180. Thalken is a true
177-pounder who was moved up after the
injury to Kyle Jensen. In addition to the
freshmen, sophomore Bill Feme, 16-10, is at
152 and Jake Sabo, 8-6, will wrestle at 167.
Track teams welcome foes
By Bob Asir.ussen

After four months of training, the Nebraska
men's and women's track teams will get to do
something they haven't done since June of 1984
compete in a track meet.
The Comhusker teams will host a quadrangular
Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center with
the men's and women's teams from Kansas
State, Drake and Colorado. Nebraska Coach Gary
Pepin said his team is ready for the meet.
"This will be the first meet of the year for the
majority of the team," Pepin said. "I think what
we're basically trying to find out is where the
athletes are. They're kind of getting stale and
tired of training."
One Comhusker who won't be in the meet will
be Olympic long jumper Angela Thacker. The
junior, who finished fourth in the long jump in
Los Angeles, is competing in the World Indoor
Championships in Paris.
Pepin said he expects the meet to be close. He
said both of Kansis Stele's teams should give
Nebraska a strong challenge.
"We'd like to win the meet point-wise," Pepin
said. "But we haven't set up our entries to
specifically win the meet. We want to try people
out in different events and see what they can
do."
Pepin said several new faces should improve
the men's team. Pepin mentioned Jean Verster
and Regis Humphrey in the middle distances,
Phillips George in the sprints, Craig Duncan and
Robert Metz in the jumps and distance runners
Bryan Clark and Kraig Vanderbeek.
Another new face Pepin said should help
improve the team is freshman sprinter Keith
Jones. Jones, from Omaha Central High School,
played on the varsity football team this season
and saw some action at I-back. Pepin said he
wasn't sure Jones would compete Saturday.
"It will be his first meet and he hasn't been
out very long," Pepin said. "I'm kind of interested
to see how he'll do."
Nebraska has had several football players run
track in the last few seasons. Another current
football player on the track team is long jumper
Von Sheppard. Pepin said despite the fact that
Sheppard hasn't been training very long, he
thinks he will have a good season.
"Von's got a year of experience and we think
he'll be improved," Pepin said.
The men's team will be captained by middle
distance runner Glen Cunningham, distance
runner Tom Hoffman End. high jumper Jeff
Lcescher. The women will be captained by
Thacker, hurdler RhoiuU Stanford and distance
runner Jill NoeL

"Our remaining three players are all new to
the starting line-up this year," he said. "Our two
guards (Lisa Campbell, averaging 5.6 points and
2.8 rebounds per game) and Jamie Siess, (6.4
points, 3.1 rebounds) are both inexperienced
and our other forward (Irenetta Henley, averag
ing 6.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game) is
playing small forw ard when I'd really like to have
her at guard."
Oklahoma State's starting line up isn't the
only area where the Cowgirls have had problems.
"Two players, forward Stephanie Matthews
and forward-center Joyce Johnson, were aca
demic casualties at mid-semester.
"Stephanie didn't play much, but the less of
Joyce really hurts us because even though she
didn't start, she was our team's third leading
scorer (averaging 9.1 points per game) as well as
our third leading rebounder (averan? 4.7 per
game)," Halterman said.
Add that to the fact that Oklahoma State
plays "sagging" defense, and Halterman said he
may find more problems.
"We play a type of defense which gives you
that 18 to 20 foot shot, but Nebraska hits those
shots better than anybody in the Big Eight,"
Halterman said. "So you can see, If we don't
come out and cover them as well as control the
boards, we could be in real trouble."
