One familiar artist Is Keith Jacobshagen, whose sweeping horizons are dominated by Nebraska skies. "To Saltillo Road," Jacobshagcn's contribu tion to this show is no different. The oil-on-canvas work shows a cloud-filled sky over a calm, rural scene. The skyscape gives the viewer a sense of the majesty of the great plains while at the same time diminishing the importance of earthly mat ters. It is also one of the few works that might be found over a couch in a middle-class living room. Another artist who has chosen this area as a subject is Susan Puelz. Herwatercolor, "Holmes Lake: July," depicts just that scene. The painting borders on the abstract, but Puelz's bold strokes and serene colors make it appealing. Martha Horvay's "Navigating the Soaps" grabs the viewer's attention with trucks, planes and soap boxes painted in bright colors. This piece falls somewhere between pop art and looks as if it was done by a p re-pubescent boy with a set of Magic Markers. "Putti" differs greatly from the other paint ings. Richard Trickey put black over a canvas previously painted aqua, yellow and orange. Trickey then wiped off the black with what looks like his finger to reveal the underlying colors as outlines of various shapes. Human figures, geo- wnm1. iiji.pwqwmwEi in. Jim mi.- u iu'wi1 metric shapes and lines all convey a sense of motion to the viewer. Trickey uses the bright colors coming through the darkness to evoke a feeling of hope from despair. One work that is more textured than the oth ers includes Ann Raschke's wool and linen weav ing, "Gone A-stray." "Embranchment XX," by Doug Ross, consists of welded steel that has been painted. Pat Rowan's sculpture, "Landscape Study," is comprised of stones arranged around mirrors. The observer can thus see more than one side of the work at a time. It even allows the viewer to become part of the work, if observed from the proper angle. Detractors might say that they could have stacked rocks on mirror tiles, but the sculpture is more than just that. The observer gets a feeling for the depth of the stones as well as a sense of introspection by looking for a purpose of the work. A painting by David Routon looks as if its subject was a faded daguerreotype. Routon's oil evokes a sense of loss in the viewer as a result of not knowing why the subject of the work was not important enough to warrant preserving. An oil painting by Dan Howard is easily recog nizable by his heavy handling of the paint and his bold strokes. It has been said that Howard is guilty of glopping paint onto the canvas and hurriedly stroking through it with a brush. This sense of imcompleteness and being rushed give this piece a momentary and immediate effect. The exhibition continues through March 3. Photo Courtesy of Jostph M. Buffo The painting "On Saltillo load," (by N. Keith Jaccbshesen,) currently is being shown tX Sheldon Art Gallery m part of the UNL fiscally exhibition.
