Camille Franklin, a 5-6 guard, Melinda Denharn, a 6-2 junior, and 5-7 Sharon Cain, one of four junior college transfers on. the squad, have been the early season stars. The Red Raiders won the Way land Baptist Invitational to begin the season, over a field that in cluded Missouri and Oregon State. They lost to third-ranked Georgia last week. The next weekend, Nebraska will travel to Michigan for its second tournament this season. Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Washington are the opponents in the Domino's Classic in Ann Arbor. The Purple Aces are 4-3. The same day, the women s team will play Oregon in Albur querque, N.M., before battling New Mexico the next day. Oregon was an NCAA tournament team last year, losing in the first round to San Diego State. This season, how ever, OU'is 2-4. New Mexico re turned 13 letterwinners this season. Both teams will return to action Jan. 9. The men's team will host Division II power Wisconsin Stevens Point and almost-Olympian Terry Porter, a 6-5 swing man, who is rated as a possible first-round NBA choice. The - ' 3 . . .v J Miller Brewing Co Miiwauk wi women will travel to Iowa to face the resurgent Hawkeyes, a pre season top 20 team before being thumped by defending national champion Southern California and Drake. Lisa Becker, a 6-4 sophomore, leads the young Ilawkeye team, which is coached by Vivian StrLngcr, who led Chey ncy State to the national finals three years ago. The women's team will host Northeastern Illinois the Satur day before school resumes, while the men's team will close out its non-conference schedule that night at Colorado State. The Rams are a Western Athletic Confer ence "sleeper" and almost beat Nebraska at home last season. Both Nebraska teams begin their conference season Jan. 16 against Kansas State at the sports center. The Wildcats, 6-0, are off to one of their best starts in the post-Renaldo Blackman era, beat ing Marquette by one point Sat urday. The Wildcats' Steve Alfaro, the villian of last year's Big Eight tournament victory over Nebra ska, has led the Wildcats in scor ing four times and has a 14.8 average. The Wildcats play Indi ana at home Saturday, at the Runnin' Rebel Classic in Las Vegas Dec. 27 and 28, then at Oral Roberts before returning home for a three-game stretch against Morgan State, Eastern Washing ton and Oregon State before the Husker game. The Lady 'Cats, last year's con ference co-champion, lost three players who played a pivotal role in the team's success. This sea son, a less experienced, less phys ical Lady 'Cats team, is 4-3, with a 78-49 loss to No. 2 Texas Saturday. The Lady 'Cats will host North ern Illinois, then travel to Grab bling and basketball powerhouses Louisiana State and Louisiana Tech before playing Nebraska.
