The fountains' spray has ceased on Centennial Mall In past years, that left only many-splendored evergreens visible above winter's DaIL But this year, thank3 to a little paint and a little coopera tion, pedestrians traveling the miracle half-mile of the mall have a few more distractions. Local artists, inspired by the idea of Ed Rumbaugh also of Lin coln, painted the protective ccnes which cover the fountains. "Before, they either had silly lit tle trees on the cones, or they were just plain white," Rumbaugh said. "Now you can see the colors from anywhere you stand on the malL" Rumbaugh's goals were to make LIVE MUSIC Bill's Salsa, 1020 P St. Progress One, souljazz, tonight through Saturday, no cover charge. He said the pro ject has succeeded. But success didnt come quickly. Rumbaugh said his idea for the cones had to go through "a lot of red tape" before it could be real ized. He approached the Lincoln City Parks Department in the summer of 1C83. They Meed the idea, and it went to the city council which also likes it, as did the Urban Design Committee. Everyone thought It was a good idea, but nobody knew what to do about it. The Parks Department finally OX'd it, and the artists went to work. Four Seasons Paint sold the artists paint wholesale, and Rumbaugh and crew donated their labor. In all, it cost the artists $120 and the city nothing, They painted the cones in a city-owned garage during the sum mer and fall, and the parks depart ment put the cones out. Each artist was given a cone and set $3 cover charge, The Rattlers, Sunday, $1.50 cover charge. You have to walk around it to get an idea of what it is," Rumbaugh said. The next cone north of Rum baugh's was painted by Carol Hartman. Her animals turtles, fishes et al are consistent with her work and with a fountain theme, Rumbaugh said. Mike Whitetey's pigs adorn the next cone. Rumbaugh said that work shows Whiteky's "wild ener getic style," as well as that artist's ongoing theme of pigs.
