Benjamin joined the skirmish,
and Curtis Moore soon followed.
Benjamin and Moore had to be
separated by officials.
In the second half, with NU
leading 44-40, Hoppen went up
for a shot, but CIPs Karlas Gri
pado hit the big center across the
arms, preventing the basket.
Hoppen gave Gripado a two-handed
shove, which knocked the
Bluejay forward back a few feet.
The officials promptly gave
Hoppen a technical.
"I shouldn't have done that"
Hoppen said later. "But I didn't
feel he was going for the ball. He
was just trying to hit me as hard
as he could on the arms."
Aside from the two incidents,
both teams played a hard, clean
game Creighton took the early
lead, going up by four, 16-12, with
13:28 left in the first halt Nebra
ska stormed back behind Hoppen
and Moore to take a 21-16 lead,
but Creighton regained the edge
at 22-21 on two free throws by
Benjamin with 9:55 left.
Hoppen then took charge for
Nebraska, scoring six of the game's
next eight points. He drove past
Benjamin for a slam-dunk that
gave NU a 27-24 advantage. Ne
braska's Moore shook the back
boards again a minute later when
he drove past Benjamin for an
other dunk to make it 31-24.
Nebraska held the lead the rest of
the half, and went to the locker
room with a 40-32 advantage.
Benjamin scored the final eight
points of the half for the Bluejays.
Nebraska scored the first two
baskets of the second half to take
a 44-32 lead, but Creighton wasn't
finished. Creighton Coach Willis
Reed installed a full-court zone
trap press that caused several
Husker turnovers and the Blue
jays came back. Benjamin hit five
straight points to give CU its only
lead of the second half, 53-52
with 10:29 left.
Again the Huskers took charge,
putting together a 13-2 run to
lead 65-55 with 5:11 left. But
Creighton again came back behind
Benjamin and Vernon Moore to
cut the lead to one, at 70-69, with
1:34 remaining. Free throws told
the story from then on, as Nebra
ska hit eight straight to perserve
the win.
"I think free throws were the
difference," Vernon Moore said.
"We missed a lot of front ends of
one-and-ones."
Moore credited the full-court
press for pulling his team back in
the game, but he said the Huskers
"maintained their composure real
well"
Besides the press, Creighton
pulled another surprise. The Blue-

jays played a zone defense. Curtis
Moore said he was shocked to see
the zone.
"Well kill a zone team," Moore
said.
Hoppen said he thought Creigh
ton went to the zone to stop Cur
tis Moore.
"I don't think they felt they
could guard Curtis," Hoppen said.
"When he gets hot, he's unstop
pable." Of his duel with Benjamin,
Hoppen said he wanted to play
on even terms with the Creighton
center.
"I just wanted to neutralize Big
Ben," he said. "He's such a great
player, there's no way I can stop
him."
Benjamin said the loss took
away any personal satisfaction
he got from his performance.
"When you score a lot of points
and lose, it doesn't mean much,"
Benjamin said. "But you just have
to be a true sportsman and accept
defeat."
Iba said he was pleased overall
with Huskers performance. He
said it was important for Nebraska
to get a win on the road.
"This was a real big win for U3,
and I'm happy for our players,"
Iba said. 'We were ready to play
tonight."
Nebraska has won five straight
against the Bluejays. The Huskers
moved to 4-0 on the year, while
Creighton dropped to 3-2.

The first name of UNL bowler
Sue Reed was cut from Friday's
story on the UNL bowling team.
Also, the first name of former
bowler Marilyn Snook was mis
spelled. Also inadvertently cut from the
story is the fact that Keed is the
only returnee from last year's
women's team and a quote from
Rollie Hughes, bowling team ad
viser, that said Snook was the
"major reason the team was able
to do so well last year."
