Friday, December 7, 1984 Daily Nebraskan chembechler 'Lost' Falcons By Steve Hsrvey THE BOWL BUNGLEES Quietly, without much fanfare, Michigan's Bo Schembechler i3 closing in on the all-time record for bowl losses by a coach. With his thrilling 7-9 beating by Auburn in the last Sugar Bowl, Schembeckler lowered his post season record to 2-9, leaving him just three setbacks short of the leader, the late Bear Bryant. Purists point out that there are so many bowls these days that anyone can lose one. In fact, with the proliferation of post-season games, schools soon will be required to play in two or three per year. But what makes Schem bechler stand out is his versatility. Thl3 year, Bo has a chance to accomplish something no other coach ever has: Lose in his fifth different type of bowL So far, he's fallen short in games named after flowers, fruits, white substances and scary reptiles. And now, he goes up against undefeated BYU in the game created in honor of the motel chain: The Holiday BowL THE BANKINGS (miniacra two drubbings) slcs JL LOO at4 record; pro ranics coach 1) Schembeckler (Michigan) 2) Claiborne (Kentky.) 3) Akers (Texas) 4) Collins (SMU) 4) Rogers (Ariz. RELIGIOUS WARS: Never before have so many religious schools been selected for bowls, what with Catholic entries Notre Dame and Boston College, The Mormons' BYU, plus the Texas Christians, the Southern Methodists and, of course, the UCLA Bruins (sun worshipers). THE PROS The games went on despite the shock over Brent Musburger's announcement that, unable to reach a contract agreement with CBS, he would jump to Italy and broadcast the local team's games in Naples next year. Meanwhile, the Lost Team of Atlanta (3-11) maintained its tentative hold on first place in the Bottom Ten with a 1 7-35 thumping by San Francisco. The mythical Falcons are at some thing of a disadvantage, since they have to play the 40ers every other week, Or does it only seem that they do? Elsewhere, top defensive effort cf the day was turned in my New Orleans (6-8) coach Bum Phillips, who held his own running back, Earl Campbell, to no yards on no carries. With help like that, the Aints fell 22-34 to the Los Angeles Lambs. Might Buffalo (2-12) ran down Indianapolis (4-10), 21-15, before a home crowd of 20,693. The game was halted several time3 when the fans asked for silence from the players on the field so they could hear their own conversa tions in the stands. TIIE RANKINGS TEAS!
