Center, priorities questioned
Before the university blindly
enters into the pursuit of the
proposed Lied Performing Arts
Center, we feel obligated to ex
press our reservations concerning
its funding and construction.
First of all, in discussing the
proposed center with fellow stu
dents, we have found little, if any,
support for its construction. Also,
even if students showed positive
sentiment toward the center, we
doubt this would carry over to.
actual attendance by the student
body. When one considers that
Kimball Hall, which seats 800,
rarely sells out to a primarily
student crowd, it appears highly
unlikely that the proposed Lied
Center would be fully used by the
student body, with whom we think
the university should be first and
foremost concerned.
Secondly, we are concerned
about about the abrupt manner
in which businesses were in
formed that they would be forced
to relocate, and thereby lose the
business created by the conve
nient and ideal location. Estab
lishments such as Tommy's, Taco
Inn and Ted and Wally's cannot
possibly hope to find a new site as
advantageous as the present one.
Thirdly, we question the uni
versity's financial priorities, con
sidering needs elsewhere within
the school It would seem that
the $ 1 5 million, hoped to be raised
through public and private means,
could be better spent elsewhere.
For instance, such a large
amount of money could be used
to lessen tuition increases. Also,
some of this money could be spent
to help create adequate parking
even at the risk of depriving
campus security of its primary
claim to existence issuing tickets.
Finally, and most importantly,
the pay scale for educators could
be raised so as to attract and
encourage higher quality teaching.
A good example of this might be
to partially replace the present
throng of teacher assistants. Al
though we realize the need to
have some TA's in order to attract
graduate students, we think the
program is being carried to an
extreme a trend which we
think is detrimental to the overall
quality of education at UNL.
All of these questions are being
considered at a time when Gov.
Bob Kerrey says Nebraska may
have trouble meeting its budget
requirements in the upcoming
fiscal years. The basic idea for the
Lied Center is admirable. How
ever, in light of the aforementi
oned points, we think the center
is unwarranted at this time and
would be a 'great expense to the
entire state.
