Department store holidays
have overrun us. If you can't
go three months in debt to
make all your friends and ac
quaintances happy during the
last week of the year, then don't
bother darkening our chimney.
Hannukah, St. Stephen's Day
and a three-week break from
classes are forgotten. The em
phasis of the holidays is Christ
mas and all the attendant Western
Hemisphere hoopla with which
Americans have surrounded it.
There are people who don't
care about Christmas. Admittedly,
in this society dominated by
Christian and commercial thought,
they are few.
For those who revere Christmas
as a time of Christian worship or
family celebration, the commer
ciality of the holidays can be
frustrating.
Most of our current traditions
have roots in celebrations begun
by our ancestors in Europe. Some
of those traditions still live. Others
have died, while some have been
transformed into symbols almost
unrecognizable from their begin
nings. It is those traditions and cele
brations which are the theme of
this issue. We hope that you can
enjoy the stories and possibly
learn something.
The Daily Nebraskan doesnt
seek to offend anyone. If there is
an omission of some point of
view, it is only because of limited
resources.
