George Carlin proved that
there are still links between
young and old.
. Flaying to a full house at
Omaha Orpheum Theatre Fri
day, the greying Carlin remind
ed the audience of all those
funny thoughts most people
have but would never say out
loud. Carlin is the master of
disgust and the creator of the
definitive List of dirty words.
Most famous for that list of
seven dirty words you cant
say on television, Carlin has
expanded the list to hundreds
of words no self-respecting
mother would mutter. But
young or old, they all laughed
at him.
Carlin's material ranged from
store clerk to clowning, pets to
prophecy and childhood to
motherhood. He ah-iibbed to
his topics of everyday situa
tions and came up with sev
eral not so usual ones. -
"Next time you go through a
toll booth, bargain with the
attendant," Carlin said. Or bet
ter yet, he suggested that a
person should pay the toll of
the car behind them. That will
keep them alert," he said.
The class clown never stood
still, constantly shuffling a
round and making stranger
than strange gestures. After
each he would reminisce of a
person vhy did the something
once and the tragic harm which
came to them.
"My grandmother did that
once and we shot her," Carlin
said.
Carlin said he was worried
about all of the recent scares
with people tampering with
medicine.
"What if someone put crazy
glue in some "Preparation H?"
he said.
He wondered why there were
no black balloons. He didni
think it was racist, and he
thought they would be great
funeral decorations.
He said he thought the real
purpose of heaven was to reu
nite people with things they
had lost like, lighters and
wallets but not good judg
ment or virginity.
He would swear to everyone
from his own mother to Good
Most laughs came from saying
nasty things everyone always
wanted to say.
Although Carlin offered no
encore, no one screamed and
hollered to bring him back on
stage. Most people were able to
keep control. Refreshingly
classy.
Opening the show were Tra
vis and Shok, two musicians
with promise. Playing parody
songs like a Don Ho version of
Quiet Riot's, "Come on Feel the
Noise," they prepared the
crowd for Carlin.
Everyone probably left the
Orpheum with sore riba.
