When Carol (Auten) Probasco
was in college, women wore
blouses and skirts no one
thought of wearing slacks, and
jeans were unheard of, Carol says.
, Carol, also a 1934 UNL gradu
ate, grew up in North Bend. When
she was a college freshman she
went to Stevens College in Colom
bia, Mo., but finished her educa
tion at UNL.
Csrol remembers that the
depression had a big effect on the
number of college students. Her
good friend from North Bend was
one of many students who had to
quit college because there wasnt
enough money. Carol lived in
Alpha Xi Delta sorority and say?
the sorority houses were never
fall
Latin was taught In all high
schools in the early 1000s, Carol
says, so she decided to major in
Latin'. After graduation, she got a
teaching assbtantship in the clas
sics department at UNL and re
ceived her master's two years
later.
Most women who went to school
"went into teaching, nursing or
secretarial (professions)," Carol
says. "It just never occurred to us
to go to law schooL"
And 3 Car as drinking goes,
Carol says she wa3 and still is, a
"teetotaller."-
"I'm sure there was some drink
ing but not at all in the sense
there is now" she says.
Carol was married in 1 037, and
like Arlene, had to give up teach
ing when she married. But, she
says, she didnt mind.
"I found rearing a family a full
time job "
But 31 years later, Carol went
back to teaching this time as a

got a job at Maude Rousseau, a
Lincoln grade school. There she
worked as the library's media
specialist for 1 1 years and retired
in 1979.
Carol says she thinks today's
students are much more mature
than those of the 19303.
"By virtue of their lifestyles,
they're much more knowledge-i-ble
So now 50 years later we
have television. There are about
24,000 students at UNL And gas
oline averages $1.15 per gallon.

more. But one has to wonder
