NU Regentfinds meeting with students useful
Ediiorisl
Policy
I wanted to comment favora
bly about one of the best events
that has happened In my term on
the NU Board of Regents.
Mark Scudder and the other
student regents on our board
organized a meeting between
members of the board and repre
sentatives of the UNL student
body on Thursday evening, Nov.
16.
We had the opportunity to hear
from the Residence Hall Associa
tion, from the International Stu
dents Organization, from the
speaker of ASUN, and the
Liaison Board. Each of the pres
entations was concise and excel
lent. Members of the board learned
about student concerns a3 well
as student activities, and that
kind of exchange always bene
ficial We have asked that similar
meetings occur on the other two
campuses and that we do this at
least quarterly while the univer
sity is in session. I wanted to
express on behalf of the elected
members of the board the appre
ciation for what the students told
us, as well as encourage other
students at all times to keep us
informed of their needs, their
criticisms; and their constructive
comments.

solely in the hands of its student

Reader says Communists steal Ethiopian aid
In response to Stacie Thomas'
editorial (DN, Nov. 20):
l.Who are your "reliable"
sources on Nicaragua? I would
really like to know.
2. 1 am not "blind" to what my
government does or is doing.
3. Nicaragua has twice before
claimed that a U.S. invasion was
imminent what happened? Net
much. Sounds like paranoid
Marxists to me. Maybe they should
kill a few more Miskito Indians or
political dissidents to help ease
their embarrassment?
4. How much have you donated
to the Ethiopian Hunger Fund?
5. Why did the Ethiopian gov
ernment spend over $100 million
to celebrate the 10th anniversary
of the communist take-over this
summer? Maybe they forgot that
people were starving to death in
their country?
6. Why does the Ethiopian gov
ernment refuse to send food to

rebel-held areas in the Tigre pro
vince? Are those people less
hungry? Maybe the Ethiopian
government has a mandate from
God not to feed everyone? Oh
that's right, I forgot. Past hunger
aid was spent by government of
ficials to build new homes and
buy Mercedes and televisions.
7. What about the past when
the Ethiopian government cried
"wolf about famine and the West
sent money only to find no fam
ine but a lot of wealthy Marxists
who care less about feeding their
people than they do about lining
their pockets?
Does all this mean that "we
blindly allowed our government
to ignore the plight of drought
stricken Ethiopia?" Hardly! Let us
not blame the people or the gov
ernment of the United States for
the greed and power-lust of the
Ethiopian communist regime. You
might not knew what is going on,
or has been going on, in Ethiopia,
but I think our government does,
and has responded in a postive
way to a horrible situation. If the
aid will go to the people, I say
"fine If I am going to contribute
to a $100 million communist
power-orgy, I say, "forget it."
