By Beth Thompson

"We want people.to know there
is pornography in Lincoln, said
Rebecca Chance, spokeswoman
for Uncoln Women Against Porno
graphy. Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the group
will picket Fenton Sundries at
1 th and 0 streets to protest the
city's largest collection of soft
and hard-core pornography,
Chance said.
Besides the two downtown

and Adult Bookstore and the
Embassy Theater, Chance said,
more than 100 stores in Lincoln
sell or offer pornographic mat
erials. Fenton Sundries manager, who
asked that his name not be used,
said the only merchandise in his
store that people could protest
would be the magazines he re
ceives from his wholesaler, Lin
coln News Agency.
They (the picketers) should be
picketing the wholesaler," he said,
lie explained that he doesn't
'choose the magazines on his
shelves, he simply accepts what
the wholesaler gives him.
He did say, however, that
such magazines have "gotten a
little ragged," when it comes to
the explicit pictures.
Chance said that while women
were supposed to close their eyes
to pornography in the past, they
must become aware of it now.
"Pornography tells lies about
women" and about women's sex
uality. And it's time to "break the
silence," she said.
Chance said anyone interested
in supporting the picket tonight
is invited to attend. She said peo
ple should realize that the obs
cenity law in America has not
been successful in preventing
pornography.
In fact, the industry has grown
into a $9 billion a year business,
with child pornography growing
the fastest, Chance said.
Lincoln Women Against
Pornography is anti-pornography
but pro-erotica (not anti-sex or
anti-nudity), Chance said. She
defined pro-erotic as to display
people in situations where an
equal balance of power is created
and no one is exploited.
Pornography, on the other hand,
depicts violence and exploitations,
and "we won't be silenced any
longer on this issue," Chance said.
Lincoln Women Against Porno
graphy originated 10 months ago.
It has sponsored fund-raisers and
bi-monthly meetings on Tuesday
nights. The next meeting is Nov.
13 at Commonplace, 333 N. 14th
St., at 8 p.m.
The organization also is plan
ning to establish a resource library
for those in ited of legal and
informational help.
