I tl Thursday, November 1, 1984 Daily Nebraskan 'Far From Poland 'impressive in unique Solidarity portrayal Review by Lisa Eenner Dally Nebrwkan tjiff Eeporter "Far From Poland" b a film about distance. Distance between countries, languages and between fact and fiction. In 1980 Jill Godmilow was in Poland at the time of the first strike at the Gdansk shipyard. She says, "...I could feel this in credible energy in the air, as if someone had broken through the wall of a vacuum cleaner." Later Godmilow was denied visas back to Poland to shoot footage about Polish Solidarity. But it was that same strength and energy she first felt that gave her the deter mination to make a film which is part documentary and part dramatization. The film is divided into texts. Each text has it's own story to tell, fact or fiction. "The Dialogues " by Godmilow and Mark Magill, are short inter actions between Jill the filmmaker and her friend Mark. The rest of the texts are interjected through out the film, the order seemingly unimportant. The action always returns to the scenes with Jill and Mark. They save the film from becoming too heavy, and perhaps too melodramatic. Mark is funny and critical, quick to provide a barbing comment when Jill can no longer separate herself from the Polish struggle. Although at times the filmmaker is being criticized, it clearly shows the involvement and dedication that goes into her work. The other texts are: "Mark's Tape Another Flaming Liberal," "Perhaps People Aren't Bad After All," "Inside The Mind Of A Cen sor," The Coal We Dig Is Ours" and "The Letters Of General 5. i 4 XT I Ul: , -toft: , v ? v r - Xi Photo Courtesy of Mark Magiil The filmmaker's tools. Jaruzelski" The main substance and emotional impact comes from the dramatizations of actual inter views published by Solidarity in Tygodnik Powszechny," the legal but censored weekly newspaper. The first interview, "Perhaps People Aren't So Bad After All," by Hanna Krall, is with Anna Walentynowicz, the 55-year-old crane operator whose firing ig nited the Gdansk strikes. Anna's testimony is inspiring; she is a woman with incredible courage. She talks about her life and Continued on Page 13 LmmmmmJ LmJ I mi nun 1 1 m nl lm.t mmtl ' mi mil WBWmwui.
