reshman football team hobbles to 41-0 shutout
By JeffKorbelik
Pally Nebraskan Staff Reporter
Spectators at Nebraska's fresh
man football team's 41-0 victory
over the William Jewell junior
varsity Monday may have been
confused with what kind of sport
event they were watching bas
ketball or football.
Both teams had a habit of
dribbling the football on Memor
ial Stadium's "superturf." The
Huskers fumbled 1 1 times, losing
six of them, and William Jewell
fumbled six times, losing four.
William Jewell also threw one
interception.
Coach Dan Young said the fum
bles were a result of using players
who have seen little playing time.

much time were revved up and
pretty excited Young said. They
(the fumbles) were explainable."
The victory enabled the fresh
man to close out the season with
a 4-1 record. The Huskers were
scheduled to play the Kansas
State junior varsity last Friday,
but Kansas State was forced to
cancel because of their injury
situation and William Jewell was
added.
The freshman controlled the
game from the outset. I-back Jeff
Wheeler scored on touchdown
runs from the 3 and 23-yard lines
in the first quarter. Wheeler, a
walk-on from Urbandale, Iowa,
rushed 18 times for 126 yards in
the game. Of those yards, 110
came in the first half.
Wheeler saw extensive action
in the first half because of other
I-backs missing from the lineup.
I-back Jon Kelley did not play
because of a hip pointer suffered
in the varsity's victory over Kan
sas State. Keith Jones has not
been with the freshmen since
their second game.
"We only have eight or nine
scholarship kids and a lot of the
walk-ons have really come on,"
Young said.
Quarterback Wendell Wooten
also rushed for over 100 yards,
gaining 131 yards on 16 carries. A
majority of his yards came on his
second quarter touchdown run
of 74 yards. He also scored again
in the third quarter on a 16-yard
run.
Backup quarterback Jim Toner
took up the slack in the passing
department. Toner completed five
of eight passes for 92 yards and
two touchdowns. He hit wingback
Pat Seawell with a 19-yard strike
at the end of the first half and
wound up the Husker scoring
with a 28-yard touchdown pass
to split end Bob Kenney late in
the third quarter.
Except for the fumbles, Young
said he was pleased with the vic-
tnrv psneciallv coming off of the
narrow loss to Waldorf Junior
College.
"We played with a lot better
intensity, we had a pretty good
effort throughout and the play
ers were up and ready to play at
the opening kickoff," Young said.
"With Waldorf we weren't ready
to play and when we were ready
we didn't have it."
The freshmen will now prepare
for the annual game against the
redshirts on Nov. 8. After the red
shirt contest, Young said six or
eight freshmen will play with the
varsity. Young pointed out that
punter John Kroeker as a likely
promotion. Young said the Husker
staff wants Kroeker to experience
the crowd noise and varsity com
petition. Kroeker set a new freshman
punting record, breaking the
previous one that had been set in
1966. Kroeker's average of 40.5
yards per punt topped Bill Bom
berger's freshman record of 40.1.
