Huskerettes replaced
by 'Iba' pom pon squad
By Led Griffin
DIIy Netraukuri li&!ttfvUr
The men's basketball team will
add a new look thb season. In
stead of seeing the Huskerettes
perform at half time, E3 in pre
vious years, spectators will see a
pom pon squad consisting of eight
women.
The idea was the brainstorm of
basketball coach Moe Iba.
"I had looked at the idea at var
ious other schools and I was
impressed," Iba said "I thought
that it might add something dur
ing as well as before the basket
ball game. I thought it would be a
good idea for our program."
Nancy Williams, men's basket
ball secretary, is the coordinator
of the group.
"The pom pon groups is a spirit
group for the basketball team,
and they will have nothing to do
with the cheerleaders," she said.
The main interest that the pom
pon squad has is just to do dan
ces and hopefully entertain the
crowd. Although they will have
nothing to do with cheerleading,
they will be active throughout the
game."
Marion Sanders of the Lincoln
Dance Studio is the squad's
choreographer.
The only prerequisite for the
squad was to want to "have fun
and help support men's basket
ball on the university campus,"
Williams said.
The squad basically has been
set up so that the fans will enjoy
the games.
"I think that it will add to the
basketball games," Iba said. They
will just be a part of the game like
the cheerleaders or the band. It is
just a part of athletics.
The main difference in the pom
pon squad and the Huskerettes i3
that the latter group only per
formed during half time. The
pom pon squad will perform var
ious types of activities through
out the game.
"The Huskerettes performed
just at half time during all games,
and we may just be performing
after every other one," said Becky
Dubas, a member of Chi Omega
sorority and a former Huskerette.
"It is not decided yet."
"I hope that the fans as well as
the student enjoy them. I think it
is going to be a good idea for our
program. It may not make us play
better basketball, but we do hope
to add to the fans' enjoyment of
the game by doing this."
