Personal fitness program
reduces 'freshman fj
By Dcrcihy Piitchsrd '

"I gained weight my freshman year and
I've never lost it."
Sharon Baiters, a registered dietitian
and assistant professor in the School of
Health, Physical Education and Recrea
tion at UNL, often hears those "words
from upperclassmen enrolled in 102B, a
personal fitness class offered through the
Center for Healthy Lifestyles.
"Many freshmen do not recognize the
veight gain because their first year is
simply a 'survival year,' " Baiters said.
Most students realfce they've cut their
activity level, but they also need help in
making their food selections at mealtimes,
she said. Baiters said she goes through a
student's menu and picks out low-calorie
items that appeal to the students
Recommendations include low-calorie
salad dressings, fewer desserts and low
calorie snacks like popcorn or fruit.
"Granola is very high in nutrients, but
most students do not realize that one
serving is only one-fourth of a cup and so
most eat much more than that."
Lack of exercise, she said, is a big cause
of weight gain. She said exercise ranks
second, behind studying, in her list of
student priorities.
Eating a good breakfast also is very
important, but, Baiters said, students
should add a breakfast menu slowly,
especially if they usually don't eat break
fast. Toast and juice will keep blood sugar
up during the day and decrease the urge
to snack, she said.
Baiters suggests students decide what
to eat before going through residence hall
food lines because they are more inclined
to stick with their menu choices.
1 102B and 1 1 2B, one credit-hour courses.
offer aerobic exercise programs tailored
to each student. These classes may
provide the extra push needed to get
students to start exercising, she said.
Although being enrolled in a class is not
necessary to get counseling on nutrition
and exercise, she said, by working for a
grade, many students are given more
incentive to continue with their personal
fitness programs.
Both courses are self-paced, so stu
dents can concentrate on individualizing
their programs.
Jan Callahan, a HPER staff member
who supervises activities at the center,
invites all students to visit the center, in
the Coliseum.
Vicki Highstreet, wellness program
coordinator for the health center, said
students must consciously do things on
their own or join group conditioning
classes and choose the right foods to eat.
"Students aren't eating what they did
at home," Highstreet said. They must
realize choices are there for them, like
choosing baked foods over fried foods."
Highstreet said students who have
never had a weight problem should begin
,to make conscious meal choices now
because everyone's metabolism decreases
as they get older and it becomes harder to
lose weight. J
Although the health center does not
provide college credit for weight' and
exercise classes, the scheduled structure
may help students adhere to a program.
Group aerobic conditioning classes
began Sept. 10 at the health center.
Students can register by calling 472-5050.
There also i3 a Student Weight Control
Group for those who are at least 15
percent overweight. Students must have
a physical at the health center before
beginning the class Oct. 1.
