Job hunt requires Creative thinking about inter ests and careers may be wiser than just leaving the job hunt to chance, said Dan Wheeler, UNL faculty car eer consultant Wheeler spoke Thursday in the Wellness Week program, "Does Life Plan ning Make a Difference or is Suc cess AU Luck?" Luck controls everything and has a lot to do with "being in the right place at the right time," Wheeler said. However, he said, many other factors also influence someone's chances of getting a job. One factor is careful planning. Wheeler said people should imagine jobs and decide whether they can see themselves in those jobs. Job seekers also must know how to present themselves in job situations, depending on the kind of job they are applying for, he said. Self-monitoring and feedback also can play a big part in getting a job and enjoying it. planning Business contacts and work experience, such as internships, play key roles in securing a good job, Wheeler said. Being involved in organizations is a way to meet people, he said. It's important, he said, to think differently than everyone else does when looking for employment and to have a "media presence." "Resumes reinforce what you're trying to do" Wheeler said. He said one-to-two-page res umes are are best. Writer At least two booths at this weekend's Lincolnfest will be dedicated to saving lives, That's because the University Lutheran Chapel plans to spon sor a car bash and a raffle to raise $8,000 for Lifeline, an emergency response system provided by the St. Elizabeth Community Health Center. Lifeline provides emergency help to elderly, handicapped and disabled persons who live alone. For $12 a month, subscribers are supplied with a portable elec tronic button, much like a garage door opener, which they can press whey they need medical or per sonal aid. Once activated, the communi cator sends a message via tele phone to the health center. The signal identifies the subscriber. Then hospital personnel call the sender to determine what help is needed. Personnel then call emer gency responders, usually friends or neighbors of the subscriber, who can help. Carol Dahl, director of public relations at St. Elizabeth, said about 20 Lincoln residents now have the devices, which are valued at $500 each. However, Dahl said, there is a waiting list of persons who want the service, but St. Eli zabeth has no more devices. Since Lifeline is a non-profit program, funds are needed to buy more units. Lifeline was created through a joint agreement between the Lin coln Area Agency on Aging and Elizabeth, the program was started through a grant from the St. Elizabeth Auxiliary. That's where the Lutheran Chapel comes in. In response to a change in tax laws requiring fraternal organizations like the chapel to donate funds to non profit groups, the chapel decided last October to contribute to Life line. A board of more than 30 Lutheran members decided to raise money through booths at Lincolnfest, according to Richard Gruenemeyer, manager of the University Lutheran Chapel. Gruenemeyer said the booths, at 1 5th and N streets, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For $1 per ticket, or 6 for $5, the raffle will award winners a microwave oven, a video cassette recorder or a color television. Or, for $1 per whack, persons can smash up a car with a sledgehammer. Mem bers of Beta Sigma Psi fraternity will run the booths. LJ LJ LJ H if 111!
