But beef judging i3 a subjective
business. One judge's champion
is another Judge's dog. One of
Werth's heifers, a reserve cham
pion in Iowa, won her class, but
failed to place in the finals.
"We hope for the best and ex-
pect the worst," says Werth.
The pricy imports aren't well
known among cattlemen. Werth
estimates only about 20 percent
of American cattle ranchers have
even heard of a Salers, let alone
know how to pronounce it.
But if Werth and others have
their way, Salers will soon be as
well known as their English cou
sins, the Hereford and the Angus
Until then, Werth says: "We don't
care what they call them as along
as they like 'cm."
