Thursday, September 6, 1934 Dally Nebraskan Pago G t v -a Daily Telethons... Continued frcn Pce 4 Think about the governmental invol vement in the Polio vaccine. The research, the effort, the resolve, the hope, the cure. Think about the millions of children vac cinated in governmental inoculation pro grams administered through the schools. Think about your son, your daughter, look in the mirror, look in the play grounds and the parks. No one need die from Polio ever again. Why not cancer? Why not Musculsr Dystrophy? Yes, direct support for all fatal dis eases. You can call it a mild form of social ism if you want. I call it doing what's right. How to distribute the money? Propor tionally, by numbers afflicted. How to get the money? Stem the growth of the defense budget. Raise taxes if we must. A hundred dollars out of my paycheck each year would hurt, and believe me, I'd gripe about it. So would you. But, dammit, it's right. The amount of money a disease receives shouldn't depend on the celeb rity it attracts, and neither should its victims. Currently, as presented in telethons, the person who is handicapped is seen as someone who we should feel sorry for, someone to take pity on, someone who is les3 than what we are, someone to pat on the head and toss a quarter to as we pass by. And finally, a thing to discard and forget about Cor another year. We can't afford to think that way. Peo ple with handicaps are part of society. They are real No better or worse than anybody else. They are not good because they are handicapped, nor are they bad because they are handicapped. They're just people like you and me. And they're not going to go away. They don't disap pear after the last seconds of the telethon flicker into darkness. Neither should we. They deserve better.
