Naked Eyes, "In the Name of
Lcve" This lighthearted Brit-
Ish techno-pop band gained some
popularity last year with their
remake of "Always Something
There To Remind Me."
This video of the, first single
from their second LP takes place
in a Tudor mansion where a bevy
of beauties lounges around a pool
sunbathing, gambles in a casino
and aerobicises in a near-by forest.
The video is merely glamorous
nonsense, devoid of much rele
vance or artistic quality.

Alpha Street Band defies Top 40
By Doima Sisscn

Somewhere in the midst of Lin
colniand lies a little street: Alpha
Street. At the Omega of Alpha
Street, which is only one block
long, sits the "Alpha Street House,"
home of the Alpha Street Band.
Contrary to any connotations
of their name, the Alpha Street
Band is not the beginning, or
Alpha, of anything. They are, at
best, in the middle of a rock'n'roll
era, carrying on the tradition with
a show of mostly cover songs and
renditions of rock classics.
Though they may not be forg
ing musical highways, what they
play, they play well, with the
same guttural vocals and yowling
guitars associated with past per
formers. Their musical selection consists
of a lot of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Sky
nyrd, and early Rolling Stones,
which leads them to refer to their
genre of music as "basic Southern
rock." They also play songs byThe
Romantics, surf songs and originals.
Recently, the band added a
Neil Diamond song. Mark Uttecht,
drummer, said they chose "Soli
tary Man" because they wanted
to add something slower to the
set. However, the band couldnt
keep it slow. They "beefed it up"
and now it doesn't sound like Neil
Diamond, Uttecht said.

are in their conceptual videos
like "Sweet Dreams." The sons is a
Caribbean-tinned dance number
that la slightly cucophonic, but
the duo produces so much energy
in this video that you overlook
the flaws in the tune. And it's nice
to see Annie in a leopard-print
woman 's pantsuit for a change.
Bananarama'Crosl Scmracr"
This sickeningiy sweet trio from
England loves to act giddy and
show off their bizarre wardrobe.
In this video, they giggle, perform
impromptu dance numbers and
show us their bad lip-sync abili
ties. It's delightfully dumb, but
what can you expect from a band
called Bananarama?
The Cars, "Drive" This band
has produced an incredibly crea
tive string of videos from their
Heartbeat City LP "Drive" is no
exception. The song i? a depress
ing ballad sung by one of the guit
arists instead of lead vocalist Ric
techt, drums and vocals.
The band has played together
for about two years and have
played bars for about 1 V& years.
Part of the band's uniqueness
comes from the fact that they
have been together so long that
. they can play songs that reveal
their individual strengths, Erick
son said.
The band has versatility be
cause of its song selection, Uttecht
said. They may be remakes, but
they aren't common ones.
"We try to stray away from Top
40 music because that's what
everybody does around here,"
Uttecht said.
Why would anybody want to
go to a bar and see a band play
live music and have a good time
listening to songs they hear three
or four times a day on the radio? I
think that's what sets us apart,"
Uttecht said.
Uttecht said they would like to
get a following before they begin
playing a lot of original music. It's
hard to get a following in the rock
market without playing Top 40
music, he said. New wave attracts
a following because it is an
advanced style.
Band members said they are of
the old school of rock 'n' roll
where music is "loud, obnoxious
and dirty."
"Maybe we dont evert under
stand it. Music always tries to be
qualified why not leave it as
fun?" Erickson said.
The main reason they play is to
have a good time, not to make a
profit, he said.
"Most of our money from play-

Ocasek. The video captures this
gloomy essence quite well as it
shows a lovelorn girl going
through mental anguish.
The Thompson Twins,"Yoa
Taka Me Up" - This synth-pop
trio from London has always used
variablity and innovation to
create provocative music and
videos. This video of the third
single from the Into the Gap LP is
shot in an imaginary prison camp.
The band members supervise
clans of convicts who dig ditches
in exchange for a cup of sIod.
Most of the scenes are stereotyp
ical vignettes about early 19X)s
prisons that come off as satire,
but they are germane to the song
that is the kind of folkish ballad
prisoners may have sung in this
time period. The video isnt all
that interesting, but the band
deserves commendation for try
ing something different . . .

ing goes to equipment and bad
habits. We got in it for fun and we
cent lose that or weVe lost the
meaning. If it can turn to profit
there's nothing wrong with that,
but if you lose the fun aspect, it's
useless," Erickson said.
They often refer to themselves
as a parly band where both band
and audience are there to have a
fun time.
The most enjoyable gig they've
had was a toss-up between St.
Patrick's Day at Chesterfield's and
a party in Ceresco where they
blew all their equipment and a
biker held up a snake while they
were playing.
