Center serves
Indians, needy
By Msrk Holt
Dallr Nebraskan StaffWriter
Offering a variety of social ser
vices, the Indian Center Inc., 1100
Military Road, assists Indians and
all Lincoln residents.
"Our concern is not limited to
Indians" Sid Beane director of
the Indian Center, said. "In fact,
most of our clients are not Indi
ans. Approximately 80 percent of
the people who come in here are
Caucasian members of the lower
class." Beane said the center offers
health care education, employ
ment, housing and food for the
needy.
"Our goal is to help members of
the Indian community to be more
self-sufficient and interact more
effectively with the system."
The agency's funds come from
private donations, the United Way,
state and city county money and
and fund raising by the center
itself, Beane said. Most of the
assistance, however, is provided
by federal aid set aside for Indi
ans, he said.
The Indian Center serves the
needs of its clients, but also tries
to act as a cultural center.
"This center is really phase-one
of a two-phase project There is a
need for more cultural events,
not just in the Indian community,
but for everyone else, too," Beane
said. "We simply don't have the
room to help everybody out"
He said he hopes a cultural
facility will be started in the near
future.
Of the 1,500 Indian citizens
currently in Lincoln, 20 are en
rolled in classes at UNL
"We're trying to help students,"
Reane said. "We're working in
cooperation with the division of
multi-cultural aiiairs to neip nat
ive American students get hous
ing and work."
For people interr d in joining
an Indian student roup, the Nat
ive American Student Congress,
organized through the depart
ment of Multi-cultural Affairs,
meets regularly on campus.
