With students being buried by the costs
of books, football tickets and tuition, the
volleyball program is offering a season
ticket package that includes 13 home
matches plus invitationals for $7. An
adult season ticket costs $15.
Coach Terry Pettit said the price for
the season tickets is about, 45 cents per
match. Since a ticket bought at the door
would cost $2, students will be able to
save $23 by getting a season pass, Pettit
"Normally a lot of teams charge a little
more, but we're getting the numbers in
with the low season price for the stu
dents," Pettit said. "We have a good fol
lowing. We just need to get more students
at the matches."
Last year, Pettit was directly involved m
the selling of season tickets. Of the more
than 1,000 season tickets sold, Pettit said
he was responsible for selling more than
half.
This year Pettit is not involved in the
ticket sales. The sales are being handled
by the ticket office in South Stadium.
Groups of volleyball supporters also
are selling tickets. Brochures are availa
ble outside Coliseum 117 explaining
season-ticket information. Pettit said a
ticket booth nu y be set up in the Nebraska
Union this week. Season tickets will be
sold at the Huskers' opener at 1 1 a.m. this
Saturday against Wichita State.
In comparing attendances with other
schools in the nation, Pettit said, Nebras
ka sells as many tickets as any university
in the country. He said Nebraska's at
tendance is the best in the Big Eight and
is even comparable to crowds that attend
matches on the West Coast.
"We have a great product," Pettit said.
We have one of the best teams in the
nation."
The Huskers finished last year in the
top ten and captured their eighth con
secutive Big Eight championship.
The United States' success in the
Olympics also boosted interest in volley
ball Pettit said.
The increased interest should help sell
Nebraska volleyball, he said. Competition
on the college level is comparable to what
was seen during the Olympics, Pettit said.
"There is no difference in speed," Pettit
said. "We have one of the fastest offenses
in the country."
Many times a small crowd can be at
tributed to a weak schedule. But Pettit
said Nebraska is hosting some of the top
teams in the country Purdue, Northw
estern, Colorado State and one of the
top teams from Canada U. DeSher
brooke. The volleyball program also receives a
boost from the football program, Pettit
said. Games are scheduled for both pro
grams on the same day to increase at
tendance for volleyball.
"People like to come in and watch a
Nebraska team win," Pettit said.
