Driving competition
tests students' sldlls
The third annual National
Collegiate Driving Champion
ships, sponsored by the Dodge
division of Chrysler Corp., will
be Sept. 7 at Northern Illinois
University, DeK&lb, III, and In
diana University, Bloomington,
Ind.
Top prise in the competition
is a $5,000 scholarship and the
use of a Dodge Daytona Turbo
Z for a year.
Any full-time college or uni
versity student is eligible to
compete in the championships,
except employees of sponsor
ship affiliates and members of
sanctioning bodies.
During the 1934-85 school
year, students from more than
100 major universities are ex
pected to participate. In the
first four weeks, the champion
ships will go to 18 schools in
Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Kan
sas, Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio and
Colorado. In all, 33 states will
be covered by the event.

and driving.
The contest challenges stu
dents to drive a serpentine
raHye-type course marked by
pylons.
Students are scored by clock
ing the time it takes them to
drive the rallye course, with
one second added to the time
for each pylon knocked down.
Campus winners will com
pete against each other at the
National Grand Final in Day
tona Beach, Fla., during the
annual college spring break.
Before the finals, "open" com
petitions will be in Daytona
Beach and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
and South Padre Island, Tex.
There, the competition will be
open to any eligible college
student who has not already
competed. Winners in these
weekly "opens" will compete in
the Grand Finals at Daytona
Beach.
First prize at the Grand Final
is a $5,000 scholarship and the
use of a Dodge Daytona Turbo
Z for one year; second place, a
$3,000 scholarship and the use
of a Dodge Daytona Turbo Z
for one year, third place, a
$2,000 scholarship and the use
of a Dodge Daytona Turbo Z
