The record is the university's
most impressive.
It would take the football team
five or more Big Eight cham
pionships to equal the confer
ence domination the Huskers
have had in volleyball since the
first conference tournament in
1975.
It may take more than five
since coach Terry Pettit, as
another famous redheaded
coach on campus seems to do,
always replaces his losses with
even stronger players who just
keep the ball rolling. Plus, five
starters return from last year's
29-4 team, which finished the
season ranked as the seventh-
best team in the nation.
"I think that this might be our
year," Pettit says, sitting in his
award-cluttered office in the col
iseum. That's not to say last
year wasn't a good year."
Last year looked a lot like
Nebraska's year all season. The
Huskers trounced Big Eight com
petition, won three invitation
als, including the San Diego State
tournament over a host of West
Coast schools. Things looked
good until the NCAA sent the
Huskers to Kalamazoo, Mich.,
for a first-round tournament
game, despite Nebraska's region
al second seed behind UCLA.
Western Michigan won the match
in four sets in front of the larg
est crowd ever to see an NCAA
volleyball match, about 8,340
people. The suspicion of a large
crowd was the reason for the
unfriendly court assignment.
Pettit lost four-time all-conference
player Erin Dean from
that team. But this might still be
the year since the returnees
include sophomore Karen Dahl
gren, who set several block rec
ords last season; junior Annette
Adamszak, an outside hitter who
made the all-Big Eight team a
year ago; junior Sharon Kramer,
another conference and region
al stand-out; and setter Mary
Buysse, a junior whom Pettit
said several times last season
was playing as well as any setter
in the nation.
