Please don't eat the 'Meatballs'
By Mark Davis
A poor cow was caught in one of the
worst western snowstorms in the his
tory of the world. The cow desperately
tried to find refuge, but the more she
tried, the more lost she became. Finally,
Movie

unable to fight for her life any longer,
the cow fell to the snow-covered ground
and froze.
There the cow's frozen body lay life
less until the spring thaw edged its way
over the ground. Nature began to take
its toll and before long the cow's corpse
began to stink and become infested
with maggots.
The depression that was scourging
the country had hit the Tri-Star Ranch
hard. Not that the ranchers were des
perate, but anything, I said absolutely
anything, they could do to bring in a
little extra cash, they would do.
One day on a roundup, Farmer Brown
came upon the decaying corpse. He
remembered what a fine cow it had
been. He had watched this cow grow
from a small calf to a very healthy
adult, in which he had the opportunity
6
to make a handsome profit.
But now there was only a corpse and
a pocket full of flies to show for the fine
beast. Farmer Brown wished so much
that there was something he could do,
but it seemed hopeless. Then an idea
came to him. Carefully, so as not to get
the rotting flesh on his hands, Farmer
Brown picked up the larger portions of
the cow and took it back to Tri-Star.
Secretly he went to the kitchen and
ground up the meat, careful not to
include any nasty maggots, and added
all the ingredients necessary to make
meatballs. They looked good when they
were finished, but there was some
thing wrong Possibly the smell.
Unwilling to give up yet, Farmer
Brown decided that he would cover
the meatballs with a little sauce to
cover-up the smell He served them
that night.
Since Farmer Brown had used re
cycled meat, he decided to call his
maggot infested feast Meatballs II.
When supper was called everybody,
was happy to see such delicacies being
served for supper. But one by one the
ranchers bit into the meatballs and
realized that they had been deceived.
They became violently sick.
"Meatballs" was a fun, brilliantly
done, touching movie with a real plot.
"Meatballs II" is not. Alas, the summer
has its largest horror film. Dont eat
the meatballs! -

Other aspects worthy of reprehen
sion in the film are the many scenes
that portray women as helpless. At
times the movie looks like a tale about
the merits of misogyny. There are too
many dominating men and meek
female characters like in a scene
where a trampy girl is thrown in a
trash dumpster. This was put in for
laughs, but I only heard a few giggles in
the theatre.
Despite bad writing and acting, the
film looks beautiful due to well-done
cinematography, set designs and cos
tuming. It is shot like a modern Fellini
movie with a combination of glitter
and ghetto sleaze. Also, the love scenes
involving lingerie-clad Appollonia and
Prince are tastefully erotic and para
mount to any X-reied flick,
I mentioned poor acting. Well, the
exceptions are you guessed it
Prince and Appollonia. Prince does a
consummate job of portraying the Kid,
and his rafSshly sensuous presence
makes him resemble a black James
Dean. Appollonia Kotero is this film's
best element as her witty performance
and outrageous good looks keep you
riveted to the screen whenever she is
on it.
If you can overlook the deplorable
storyline and instead enjoy the many
concert sequences, this movie will seem
like a long, mind-blowing MTV video;
but without music, the picture is a
bomb. However, Prince, Appollonia and
the innovative look males "Purple Rain"
worth seeing.
