UNL men's crew takes two Sanders snags seven signees in Chicago Sprint Regatta The UNL Crew Men's lightweight Four team captured second place in the Chicago Sprint Regatta men's Open Four division of the' Chicago Sprint Regatta last weekend. The regatta was run English Henley style, where two boats race each other head to head with the winner advanc ing to the next round. UNL defeated Milwaukee Rowing Club's Heavyweight Four in the semi finals by more than a full boat length, advancing in to the final round against Lincoln Parks Boat of Chicago (LFEC) Heavyweight Four. LPI3C had been winning easily all day, but UNL crew took them to the wire. The UNL rowers got a slow start, then pressed the Chicagoans, but never gained the lead. LPBC's winning time was 3:45.8, while UNL finished in 3:50.5. UNL has been training for 2000 meter races, and the Chicago regatta races were 1000-meter sprints. Club president Steve Knapp said he was pleased with the crew's showing, but felt UNL may have done better over a full 2000-meter course. "We do a lot of technique and control work for practice so that over the last five hundred to one thousand meters of a race, when other crews gt tired and fall apart, we can make our move and row right through them," Knapp said. The Chicago Sprint wa3 the UNL's second scheduled major regatta of the summer. The first, the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia, was flood ed out the night before the race. The UNL crew team coxswain Richard Hanigan and oarman Steve Morin, Tony Savich, Chip Purdom and Knapp will now begin preparations for the Royal Canadian Henley in St. Catherines, Ontario Aug. 8 through 1 2. The Canadian Henley is the largest regatta in North America. Coach Pur dom said his crew should do very well there, perhaps even rowing into the finals. Slidi O (f 55ll "fl singly. Nebraska baseball coach John Sand ers wrapped up his recruiting efforts for 1084 by announcing the signing of seven more athletes to national letters of intent to play for the Huskers, bring ing the total number of new recruits for next fall to 10. The seven latest signees are Burt Rattie of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Jeff Mays of Sedalia, Missouri; Jeff Kainey of Oklahoma City, John Walker of Okla homa City, Kelvin Musgraves of Bar tleville, Oklahoma; Druse Wobken of Scribner; and Phil Goguen of San Diego. Sanders had previously announced the signing of Brett Beede of Plymouth, New Hampshire, Larry Mlms of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Larry Mulligan of Omaha, Sanders termed his 1984 recruits a "solid" group. "With the exception of Goguen, we were pretty much finished three weeks ago. We've used that time to further, evaluate our recruits and we feel really good about them. A year ago we were scrambling for players since we led the nation in drafted players (nine). This year, we only lost two players, and they were both seniors. With less holes to fill, we were able to be more selective .about who we looked at," Sanders said. How you live ?Qr.:ZZX may save your life.
