'Rhinestone': unusually bad film
Review by Tom MocMer
"Rhinestone" is an unusual film unusually bad.
It strikes me as a little funny that I should be
reviewing this film, after reviewing a similar film,
"Two Of A Kind" this spring. These two, "along with
1979's "The Main Event," it in a special genre very
bad movies that were created for the sole purpose of
uniting or reuniting box office draws with the hope
of creating still more business at the box office.
This has to be the lowest form of Hollywood com
mercialism even below sequels.
In the three recent examples I have just cited, you
have an actor and an actress who are romantically
united on screen and have a light comedy accom
panying them. Jumping specifically to the example

Stallone and Parton together in a dud.
at hand Slyvester Stallone ("Rocky" etc.) and Doily
Parton (country singer, "Nine to five") are brought
together by a horribly contrived plot. Dolly Parton,
who somehow gets locked into a horrible contract
with a sleezo manager, bets she can turn anyone
into a country singer. Low and behold, Sylvester
Stallone shows up, muscles and all, and Doily Parton
goes to work. If she can work her country magic, she
is free.
Okay, Slyvester Stallone easily passes for a man
who could never be turned into a country singer.
And he never is, although for some reason the on
stage audience loves him. The film is perhaps 10
percent genuine laughs, but an excruciating 90 per
cent agony as the audience is forced to sit through
several Stallone "singing" numbers, and some really
bad acting and writing. Stallone can be funny when
he is allowed to be, but that period could probably
be fit into the duration of an MTV video.
