UNL summer graduates will graduate in style this
year.
For the first time in 1 4 years, UNL will experiment
with full-scale commencement exercises in mid
August. According to John Yost, Assistant to the Chancel
lor, the ceremony will be like the regular fall and
spring semester exercises complete with caps
and gowns and pageantry but on a smaller scale.
"The decision was made in response to several
students and parents to have a more formal com
mencement," Yost said. "In previous years, students
attended an informal ceremoney where their names
were called and they stood up. I think this year's
ceremony will be more personable," he said.
About 800 graduating seniors will walk to the
platform and receive their diplomas from the dean
of their colleges this summer, the former summer
graduation committee chairman, professor Patrice
Berger, said. Although the ceremony will not be
mandatory, officials expect a good turnout on'
August 18.
Although he hasn't had any official feedback yet
on the new graduation format, there are some who
are unhappy with it, Yost said.
Margaret McGovern, a broadcast journalism major
with three hours left to complete before she can
graduate, is one who is disappointed with the new
format. She said she would rather have an informal
ceremony to attend at the end of the first session so
she can move on to other things.
"I don't know where I'm going to be in August,"
McGovern said. "I could get a job and have to move
and then not be able to attend the ceremony."
McGovern said she was upset she wasn't informed
earlier that the full ceremonies were to be imple
mented. If she had known, she said, she would have
taken the three credit hours she needed in the
spring semester and graduated in May.
If students cannot attend the August ceremony,
they can pick up their diplomas at their conven
ience in the Administration Building, Yost said.
The Chancellor's office will evaluate this sum
mer's graduation, once completed to determine if
the tradition of full summer graduation ceremonies
will be restdred to UNL in the future.
