OMAHA Notes taken Sunday night during Cal
State Fullcrton'8 3-1 victory against defending
champion Texas in the championship game of the
College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium;
Pregame: Enter the ballpark listening to Frank
Sinatra's voice singing "My Way" over the public
address system. Somehow I expected organ music
instead. Although the bleachers are nearly filled,
there are open seats around me in the grandstand.
First Inning; No sooner than the Star-Spangled
Banner ritual is completed, Texas scores in the top
half on two singles and a sacrifice. Longhorn fans
are exuberant, perhaps smelling a rout as they
wave their state flags and flash the "Hook-em;
Horns" sign, ring & pinkie fingers extended.
Second Inning: Fullerton knots the score with
textbook baseball; A hit batter, a steal of second
base and a run-scoring single. Titan fans, though
less in number than their Longhorn counterparts,
still mug for the ESPN cameras.
Fourth Inning: Titans take a 3-1 lead as John
Bryant's triple-to-right-center field keys a two-run
inning. Fullerton's Kirk Bates twice loses his grip on
the bat sending it flying past bewildered Texas
pitcher Greg Swindell.
Fifth Inning: Pleasing to the eyes were the
moments when Titan pitcher Eddie Delzer strikes
out another Texas batter, the feat punctuated by
the home-plate umpire signaling witji his one arm.
The ump turned toward the third-base stands,
extends his left arm and bellowed "Yer-r-r-rout."
Sixth Inning: The CWS mascot, the Miami Maniac,
is more entertaining at this point than the game. He
banters with umpires, shakes hands with fans, dan
ces around the infield and even does a routine
spoofing Michael Jackson's 'Thriller" video. Texas
Coach Cliff Gustafson, however, is oblivious to his
antics, staring at the ground as he strolls to the
third-base coaching box each inning.
Seventh Inning: This is the fans' big chance, says
public address announcer Jack Payne, to break into
show business. It is the final meeting of the CWS
Free Will Choral Society singing "Take Me Out to the
Ball Game." Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray
would have been envious as "one...two...three strikes,
you're out at the old ball game" is perfectly executed.
Eighth Inning: A friend had just remarked about
the lack of sterling defensive plays when Texas
fielders make three such plays in succession. Short
stop Jamie Doughty leap3 high in the air to reach a
stealing liner; Steve Hodo makes an over-the-head
catch on the run in center field; and third baseman
Dave Denny dives for a hard-hit ball, regains his
footing and throws out the batter.
Ninth Inning: Tension builds as Cal State Fuller
ton is but three outs away from its second series
title. Reliever Scott Wright, who set an NCAA record
with 23 saves this season, retires Denny and catcher
Darrin Loy. Outfielder Dennis Cook is the Long
horns' last hope, and his attempt to reach base by
being hit by a pitch is greeted with jeers from the
fans and a strike being called.
He then flies out, touching off a wild Titan-ic cele
bration to the right of second base, the players rol
ling in the grass. Delzer, whose father was murdered
two years ago, meanwhile weeps openly in his
Glumly, the Longhorns accept runner-up honors,
their hopes of another national title gone. For Ful- -lerton
State, the celebration would continue long
after the 2,487 fans emptied the stadium.
