Fine arts in Lincoln
at Sheldon, Haymarket
By Sarah Sielcr
Sometime when you're out enjoying the warm
spring air you should stop by the little garden-in-the-wall
behind the Korn Popper, 14th and N
streets. Foundation Garden is a picturesque little
place, full of flowers, trees, benches and fountains.
Nice at any time, Foundation Garden is especially
popular on Wednesdays from noon to 1:00 p.m.
Fine Arts
when it is the setting for a summer concert series
sponsored by the Lincoln Center Association.
Wednesday's concert features Nancy Marshall &
Jazz Friends. Nancy has played for the Foundation
Garden concerts before. This year she will be joined
by five university students from a small ensemble
class they are taking together. Jazz Friends consists
of Dayle Cooper, drums; Chris Hartung, guitar; Pat
Halderman, saxophone; Jim Kimball, trumpet; and
Steve Gomez, bass.
Nancy Marshall & Jazz Friends will be followed by
a children's singing group from Southwood Academy
and the Beatty Bunch from Rural Beatty School.
Sheldon Art Gallery currently is showing several
interesting exhibits. A collection of photographs by
Hal Holoun captures the subtle beauty of Nebraska
landscapes. A small sculpture display by Dan Para
gine decorates the hall by the gift store. American
Abstract Expressionist Painting from the Blaffer
Foundation Collection is on display in the upstairs
gallery. The photographs and small sculpture dis
plays will be up until Sunday. The collection of
abstract paintings will be shown through July 29.
The pottery of Jerry Kessler currently is being
featured at the Haymarket Art Gallery, 119 S. 9th
St. A native of Mitchell, S.D., Kessler now lives and
produces pottery in the Loess Hills of Monona
County, Iowa. Kessler's goal is to make functional
ware as brilliant, rich and exuberant as possible.
Anyone who is interested in the arts in Nebraska
might want to attend a discussion between Norman
Geske and Leonard Thiessen today at 7:30 p.m. in
the Heritage Room at Bennett Martin Public Library.
Geske, director emeritus of the University of Neb
raska Art Galleries, will interview Thiessen, first
Director of the Nebraska Arts Council and long-time
activist in the arts and literature in Nebraska.
