A travelers' advisory for the Oklahoma State
baseball team: beware of strong arms and swixi
feet In the Lincoln area this weekend as you travel
the Road to Omaha.
That road, of course, leads to the College World
Series in June. Oklahoma State has appeared in
the CWS the past three seasons. Nebraska is seek
ing its first appearance.
Although both Nebraska and Oklahoma State
have qualified for the Big Eight's post-season
tournament, their four-game series Saturday and
Sunday could decide the regular-season champion
ship. Depending on which poll you believe, 44-15
Nebraska is 10th (Collegiate Baseball magazine)
or 1 1th (Baseball America magazine). Oklahoma
State 45-10, is eighth and fifth, respectively.
Oklahoma State, after a sweep of Kansas, is tied
with Oklahoma for the conference lead at 12-2.
For either the Cowboys or the 14-3 Huskers to
claim the regular-season title and the top seed in
the post-season tournament, it must win one
more game than the Sooners this weekend.
Oklahoma hosts Missouri in a four-game week
end series.
Cowboy Coach Gary Ward said he is anticipat
ing the series with Nebraska.
"It'll be a fun weekend at Nebraska. We need
that kind of road pressure right now with the
tournament just around the corner," he said.
Oklahoma State's strength is hitting, with five
regulars having higher averages than Nebraska's
top hitter, Bill McGuire.
Sophomore sensation Pete Incaviglia leads the
team in averse (.301), heme runs (20), hits (C5)
and runs batted in (69).
Gary Green, batting .444 in his 14 conference
games, has a .392 average. Catcher Mike Day is at
.374, with Billy Smith rt .356 and second baseman
Bandy Whisk r at .350.
Junior outfielder Scott Wade, after a .351 sea
son, has tailed off to .310, but has hit 10 home
runs and stole 28 bases.
OSU pitching coach Tom Holiiday was unsure
of the Cowboys' rotation for Saturday and Sun
day's double-headers. Five pitchers could receive
the nod: Dennis Livingston (7-1), John Farrell
(9-1), Mike Henneman (6-1), Mike Trapasso (5-1)
arid Gary Kanwisher (2-1).
According to Nebraska pitching coach Mike
Evans, Jeff Anderson (8-3) and Phil Harrison (10
1) will start Saturday, with Jeff Koenigsman (5-1 )
and Chris Knust (3-3) starting Sunday.
"Nebraska is not a ball club that just sits back
and plays" Ward said They play hit-and-run
baseball"
Nctea: The Huskers' new locker room and
office complex will be dedicated Saturday in pre
game ceremonies. Otto and Gladys Baumann,
who donated much of the money for the complex,
and Husker booster Alex Etting will be honored
. . . Sunday, Nebraska seniors will be honored
prior to the 12:30 p.m. double-header . . . First
baseman Mike Duncan has raised his average
from .259 to .303 in his last 17 games, including
five homers and 22 RBI's . . . Jeff Carter has gone
on a triple binge, rapping six three-base hits in his
last 17 games . . . Husker Coach John Sanders,
with three victories against the Cowboys, will
post his 100th conference victory.
