On a day fit for neither man nor
duck, Nebraska and Kearney State slosh
ed through 12 innings of a double
header at rain-soaked Buck Beltzer
Field Wednesday.
Nebraska shut out the Antelopes
twice, 7-0 and 8-0. The sweep was
Nebraska's first since the Huskers won
two games from Northwestern of Iowa
April 24.
Jeff Carter's two-run triple highligh
ted the first game, which was shor
tened to seven innings. After a 66
minute rain delay in the second game,
Mike Duncan's grand slam capped a
six-run uprising in the third inning.
The game went for the minimum of
4Vi innings.
"Under those conditions, balls were
well hit," Nebraska Coach John Sand
ers said. "We had some timely hitting,
and with the exception of early in the
first game, our defense was good."
Duncan's home run, his 13th of the
season, preceded a solo homer by desig
nated hitter Rich King.
Nebraska added two runs in the
fourth on three consecutive singles
and a wild pitch.
Roger Webb and Tom Holmes com
bined to pitch a two-hitter, Webb rais
ing his record to 5-0 with the victory.
Only two Antelope runners reached
second base.
In the first game, relief ace Bill
McGuire threw nearly four innings of
one-hit ball, his longest sting of the
season. The Omaha-Creighton Prep
graduate entered the game in the fourth
inning with two on and got Kearney
State's Todd Johnson and Cody Schil
ling to ground out.
"Bill needed the work," Sanders said.
"He hasn't pitched as much lately as we
would haved liked." .
The Huskers made McGuire's pitch
ing easier by scoring three runs in their
half of the fourth inning.
A throwing error by Antelope third
baseman Jim Isaacson scored David
Turney with Nebraska's initial run.
Scott Hooper singled to score Carter,
then he stole home on a double steal
with Paul Meyers.
Meyers almost scored a fourth run,
but it was ruled he touched home plate
after McGuire was tagged out in a run
down between first and second base
on another double-steal attempt.
Carter's fifth-inning triple followed a
two-base error on an RBI single by
catcher Craig Radcliffe. Hooper added
a sacrifice fly.
Hooper and Meyers each stole three
bases in the game. Hooper now has
stolen 55 bases in 59 attempts.
Radcliffe and Turney each batted 3-for-4
in the double-header, raising their
averages to .269 and,284, respectively.
