Soviet committee claims
Olympic cliarier violated
MOSCOW The Soviet Committee Monday
said the Soviet Union accused the United
States of violating the Olympic charter in its
preparation for the smmer games in Los Angeles
and hinted it may boycott the games. A state
ment by the SOC claimed a campaign was afoot
in the United States against Soviet athletes
picked for the games and, in a hint that they
may stay away, said their personal security
could not be guaranteed. Declaring that an
"abnormal situation" had developed in the
run-up to the July games, it called for an emer
gency sitting of the International Olympic
Committee to review the situation and compel
Washington to "respect the Olympic charter."
Beirut disennascoent ceto OK
BEIRUT Lebanon's warring groups Mon
day night gave final endorsement to a plan for
disengagement of forces along the Beirut con
frontation lines. The plan was endorsed at a
2'-hour meeting of a "higher security commit
tee" of senior officials from the groups, chaired
by President Amin GemayeL Sporadic daylong
clashes along the Green Line dividing east and
west Beirut continued into the night as the
committee, set up at last month's inconclusive
peace conference in Lausanne, Switzerland,
approved the plan. The political-military com
mittee includes senior delegates from the right
wing Christian Falangist Party and the four
main fighting forces the army, the Christian
Lebanese Forces militia and the Druse and
Shi'ite Moslem militias.
Drug ring smashed, Smith cays
NEW YORK A Sicilian Mafia leader said to
be one of the world's top heroin exporters has
been arrested and a major drug-distribution
ring in New York was smashed, U.S. Attorney
General William French Smith announced Mon
day. Smith announced the arrest in Madrid of
Gaetano Badalamenti, who officials said was
one of the major heroin exporters in the world,
and said that 24 other people had also been
arrested in the United States. Smith said dur-,
ing a New York press conference that they
were charged with taking part in a heroin dis
tribution ring that sold at least $1.6 billion
worth of the drug in the past five years.
Rebels launch Mg2ci assault
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras Rightist rebels
in Nicaragua launched their biggest
operation ever against the Managua govern
ment last week, using all 8,000 of their men
under arms, an insurgent leader said Monday.
Edgar Chamorro CoroneL. of the Nicaraguan
Democratic Force fighting to overthrow the
leftist Sandinist government from bases in
Honduras, said the rebels had killed more than
54 Sandinist soldiers. He did not mention
insurgent casualties. He also told Reuters the
FDN was about to announce a pact with the
Democratic Revolutionary Alliance, a smaller
Nicaraguan rebel movement operating from
Costa Rica.
Earlier efforts for an alliance between the
two groups had failed, mainly because of ideo
logical differences. Arde leader Eden Pastora
is a former Sandinist hero, and most of his
2,000 men are disgruntled Sandinists. Many of
the FDN are old foes, ex-national guardsmen
who served dictator An astasia Somoza.
Mickey Mouse goes Latin
VATICAN CITY Mickey Mouse has begun
speaking Latin as part of a campaign to keep
the ancient language alive. Mickey Mouse
(Michael Musculus in Latin) is featured in an
article in the Vatican newspaper Osservatore
Romano Monday announcing the publication
of a comic book in Latin on his exploits, trans
lated by Vatican scholar Carlo Egger. The arti
cle said Mickey and his cartoon friends helped
provide a direct stimulus to students of the
ancient language, "proving that Latin is and
can be a living language today." Donald Duck
(Donaldus Anas) already has his own Latin
;; comic, also translated by Father. Egger, as part
: of a campaign by the European Language
Institute to keep Latin alive. In the new comic,
Michael Musculus travels by plane (aeronavis)
to China via Hong Kong (Kongongum) and
uses a computer (instrumentum computato
rum) and a satellite (satelles telecomunicatio
mbus mserviens) to look for a philosopher's
stone (lapis sapientiae).
