Monday, April 9, 1C34 Daily Ncbrcskan Pago 13 Colorado serves Nebraska ninth tennis loss of season By Scott Ahlstrand Friday was not the best of days for the UNL men's tennis team. Playing without their top player, Craig John son, the Huskcrs fell to Colorado, 8-1, at home. The loss evened Nebraska's record to 9-9 and left them in a precarious spot for the upcoming Big Eight tourna ment. "It really hurt us a lot," third-year Coach Kerry McDermott said of the loss. "We figured that even if we lost, we'd still win four matches." The Huskcrs were blanked 6-0 in singles action: John Rhodes subbing for Johnson in the No. J. spot lost 6-0, 6-2; No. 2 Ridge Smidt dropped a 7-6, 6-2 decision; No. 3 Ashwin Vasan lost 6-3, 6-3; No. 4 Brian Edwards lost 7-5, 6-4; No. 5 Jim Carson was defeated 6-4, 6-2; and No. 6 Jim Burton lost 6-4, 6-3. Smidt and Vasan lost 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 team of Edwards and Tony Sloboth fell 6-4, 7-5. The lone victory for the Huskers came when Carson and Burton won 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 doubles matches. Overall, McDermott said the loss was just a case of being outplayed. "Colorado played about as well as they've played all year and we played as bad as we have so far this season," McDermott said. McDermott was optimistic about the Huskers' chances before the match. Nebraska was coming off a 3-5 West Coast trip that McDermott said allow ed the Huskers to gain valuable expe rience against top competition. ; "The schedule was really tough and it made our guys have to play well day in and day out. Not one of the teams we played was weak," McDermott said. Chalking up the 8-1 loss to CU as "just one of those days when you don't get any breaks," McDermott said the Huskere will have to play much better to upset Oklahoma this Friday at Nor man. "We're going to have to pull up our team morale or it could be hard to pull out any wins," McDermott said.
