Blue jeans - an (almost)
all American classic
Analysis By SHELLEY SPEREY
They serve as black market currency
in the Soviet Union. Like jazz and Cook
ie Monster they are symbols of a uni
que but often-copied American style.
They are blue jeans.
From Beaver Cleaver to James Dean
andfromJohnDenver to Brooke Shields,
some of pop culture's most revered
heroes or anti-heroes are known
by their denimed derrieres.
The blue jeans phenomenon began
with the Levi-Strauss company's tough
indigo-dyed workpants.
Word has it, however, that Levis
soon will put its own designer fashions
on the market. As if the famous Levis
label and omnipresent phrase, "official
oufitter of the U.S. Olympic team" wer
en't enough, Levis has commissioned
Perry Ellis, known for his classic colors
and soft tailoring in men's and wompn-e
fiaute couture, to do an entire line of
skirts, pants, sweaters and tops. Accord
ing to the March issue of Vogue, the
line, patriotically titled "Perry Ellis
America" should appear in stores in
late fall
iLiucolnites searching for the casual
look and comfort of jeans have a wide
range of options.
Department stores offer the high
fashion and fairly high prices of Calvin
Klein, Esprit, Gloria Vanderbilt and
overalls which claim to be terribly
French, called "Gasoline." Not just den
im, but often the whole rivets-and-contrasting-stitching
look translates
into skirts, jackets and dresses that
can be worn in a business or profes
sional atmosphere.
