Linda B. Yost said 10 scholars from Nebraska colleges and universities will receive $2,500 each to devote two months of their summers to full-time research in public humanities. Public humanities include English, philosophy, his tory and anthropology, among other subjects, Yost said. The UNL winners were Karen Dyer, a gradu ate English student; David Wishart, an asso ciate professor of geography, Thomas Holland, a visiting instructor of English; and David Woo ley, a graduate anthropology student. In its application, the NCH sought people whose area of study included Great Plains reli gion, philosophy, politics, or the historical orig ins of art and music on the plains. The NCH also looked for people who see studies focus on public issues dealing with rural society. Stipend recipients must agree to give the material they collect back to the public, Yost said. They can do this in two ways, she said. They can develop their research into presenta tions, such as lectures or slide shows, or collect it into printed form to distribute in NCITs humanities resource center. For instance, Yost said, Holland will make a study guide to be distributed by the resource center to non-profit organizations. Informa tion is available through grant funds or rental fees. Yost said the information is geared to out-of-school adulta According to the NCH newsletter, Holland's study guides will complement film-discussion programs built around his research on the American short story. The 1 7 films will discuss short story authors such as Henry James, Katherine Anne Porter and Mark Twain. The scholars will travel in Nebraska or stay near their colleges or universities to research their areas, Yost said. Dyer will research the role of music in the life of 1 Qth-century Nebraska settlers. Wishart will research the dispossession of eastern Nebras ka's Indians in the 19th century. Wooley will research the arts of the Otoes-Missourl Other winners include: Ruth Putilo, NU Medical Center Depart ment of Medical Jurisprudence and Humani ties, "Medical Ethics: Lessons from the Rural Experience" John Mark Nielsen, Dana College English Department, "The Danish Immigrant Expe rience" Allan Shepherd, Chadron State College History Department, "Madrid" Nanette Graf, Nebraska Wesleyan Univer sity English Department, "War, Peace and Survival'' Michael Fowler, York College Art Depart ment, "Exploring the Heritage: Images of the Prairie Landscape" Kenneth Holder, Nebraska Wesleyan Eng lish Department, "Grammar Study in Nebraska Schools from the 1940s to the Present" if PgJj I , lit lt!
